FULLERTON, Calif. – The Cal State Fullerton Titans hosted the UC Irvine Anteaters for an eventful Big West matchup on Saturday evening. The Titans and Anteaters had an evenly matched first half before UCI picked up their momentum and ran away with a 86-64 win.
UCI struck first before freshman,
Christian Williams scored to put the Titans on the board.
Joshua Ward hit a three pointer to tie the game at five before hitting another to give Fullerton a lead that they would hang onto for six minutes. The Titans had their highest lead at the 13-minute mark, where they led 16-9.
CSF and UCI kept trading the ball and UCI's 67% shooting percentage helped them chop down on the Titans lead. Fullerton only shot 36% in the first half, eventually leading to a 10-point deficit at the end of the first half. The Titans were successful on the Anteaters' turnovers as they cashed in 12 points on nine turnovers. UCI led 47-37 going into the second half.
In the second half, UCI took full control over the Titans and ran away with an 86-64 win. Fullerton continued to tack on points, but it wasn't enough to catch up to Irvine. The Titans put together a nine-point scoring run, but so did the Anteaters and they led by as many as 23 in the second half. Both teams had six turnovers in the latter half, but the Titans only scored one while UCI tallied 10.
KJ Garris led the team with 19 points while
Landon Seaman, Williams and Ward also tallied double-digit points against UCI.
Jefferson De La Cruz Monegro led the team in rebounds with seven and assists with four.
The Titans are back in action next Thursday, Jan. 8 at UC San Diego at 7 p.m.
