FULLERTON, Calif. - The Cal State Fullerton Titans women's basketball team defeated Cal Poly 73-41 on Saturday afternoon at Titan Gym to complete a season sweep over the Mustangs.
The Titans suffocating defense held the Mustangs to just nine points at halftime as the Titans led 44-to-9 at the break. It was the second lowest amount of points the Titans have allowed in a first half this season (6 against La Sierra) but it was the fewest amount of points allowed in a half against a NCAA Divsion 1 opponent.
The Titans improved to 11-9 overall for the season and 7-3 in conference play through the first round of Big West action. The Titans are in fifth place right behind 7-2 UC Santa Barbara and UC Davis.
Neither side shot particularly great as the Titans shot just 39.1% from the floor (27-for-69) but they held the Mustangs to 26.5% shooting (13-for-49). The Titans dominated the boards with a 53-to-33 disparity their second highest total of the season (63 against La Sierra) but once again most against an NCAA Division 1 opponent. The Titans defense forced 26 turnovers and converted those into 30 points. The Titans also had 14 steals against Cal Poly.
The Titans set the tone early in the game as they went on a 12-0 run to start the game.
The Titans took a 23-6 lead after the first quarter after a 3-pointer from
Madelynn Muniz. The Titans had 5 steals and forced 11 turnovers in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Titans led 28-9 as Cal Poly made their only three points in the quarter after a three-point basket at the 7:58 mark. The Titans then scored 16 points unanswered the rest of the second quarter and led 44-9 at halftime.
The Titans called off the full court press for most of the second half. The Mustangs outscored the Titans 32-to-29 over the final 20 minutes as the Titans tried to run down the shot clock on a majority of their offensive possessions.
Almost every available Titan got at least double digits in minutes played for the game.
Talia Maxwell led the Titans with 17 points and 9 rebounds.
Maddy Tauro had 12 points and
Kya Pearson had 10 points.
The Titans will be idle on Thursday before returning to action against UC Santa Barbara at home next Saturday. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m. at Titan Gym as the Titans look to complete a series sweep over the Gauchos.
