FULLERTON, Calif. - The Cal State Fullerton Titans women's water polo team swept Whittier College and Azusa Pacific University at the Titan Mini Invitational on Friday at the Titans Aquatic Center. The Titans dominated the first game 17-4 over the Poets before rallying back from an early deficit to earn the 11-8 win over Azusa Pacific.
Cal State Fullerton 17, Whittier College 4
In the Titans first game of the day, the Titans overwhelmed their opponents from the get go. Â They went on a 8-0 scoring run before the Poets scored their first goal two minutes before halftime.
The Titans led 12-2 after three quarters of play and outscored the Poet 5-to-2 in the final frame to earn the 17-4 victory.
The Titans were able to give playing time to everyone in the game. Â
Kenzie Searle (3 goals),
Chandler Burrell (3 assists), and
Hannah Reekstin (3 goals) led the team with three points each. Â
Destiny Hernandez scored twice while
Elise Bliss,
Gabrielle Zaretskiy,
Delaney Latham, Mia HAtch,
Kendal Santos,
Mikka Von Scherr,
Abby Lockman,
Isabella Schulze, and
Sofia Moschetti all scored against the Poets.
Renske Boxsem started the game and made one save. Â
Alexandra Ortiz played the second and third quarters and made three saves. Â
Isabella Walker played the final quarter and made two saves.
Cal State Fullerton 11, Azusa Pacifc 8
The Titans had to come from behind in the second game of the day against the APU Cougars. Â
It was all Cougars in the first quarter as they took a 4-1 lead over the Titans.  However, the Titans switched gears in the second quarter as they outscored APU 6-2 in the period.Â
Emme Doube-MacLeod scored the first goal before APU responded to give their three goal lead at 5-2.
The Titans then went on a 4-0 scoring run as
Lotte Boxsem,
Destiny Hernandez,
Mia Solorzano, and
Delaney Latham all dented the twine to give the Titans a 6-5 lead.
The Cougars tied the game at 6-6 with 18 seconds left in the quarter before
Mia Solorzano scored with six seconds left to give the Titans a 7-6 lead heading into the halftime break.
The Titans outscored the Cougars 3-to-2 in the third quarter. Â Both sides traded goals as
Lotte Boxsem and
Emme Doube-MacLeod scored early in the period. Â
Kenzie Searle scored with 1:04 left in the perid to give the Titans a two goal cushion at 10-8 heading into the final quarter.
After
Mia Solorzano scored a goal with 7:06 left to give the Titans a 11-8 lead, it became a strong defensive effort by the Titans to keep the Cougars off the board the rest of the way.
Renske Boxsem made eight saves in goal for the Titans.
The Titans will head on the road for the first time this season next week as they head to the Triton Invitational. Â Their first game is on Friday against a TBD opponent and the Titans will learn their subsequent opponents based on results the rest of the tournament.
