Davis, Calif. – The Cal State Fullerton Titans headed up north to take on the UC Davis Aggies in a late comeback battle on Thursday. The Titans were down by as many as 17, before attempting a comeback that would put them in a deficit of just three points with seconds remaining in the game.
In the first half, the Titans and Aggies traded points for most of the half. UC Davis took a 12-point lead, their highest of the half, leading Fullerton 25-13 with seven minutes to go in the first. As CSF tacked on points the Aggies did too, staying on top by a score of 32-24 heading into the half time.
Joshua Ward led the Titans with 10 points in the first half. Ward also had a team high three rebounds and one block before the break. Fullerton shot just 32% and struggled behind the arc, nailing just one three-pointer. While the Titans had fewer turnovers than the Aggies, UCD tallied 11 points from turnovers while CSF only nabbed nine.
The Titans pace of the game carried into the beginning of the second half, and the Aggies continued to find success at the basket, taking a 17-point, 60-43 lead with 7:30 left in the game. Trailing by 12 in the final three minutes, the Titans chipped away at their deficit thanks to four straight three-pointers from
Jaden Henderson,
Davis White, and Ward. Ward's shot put the team within three with 22 seconds remaining. Three fouls in the final seconds sent UC Davis to the charity stripe, ultimately sealing the game 74-69.
Bryce Cofield logged 10 in the second half while Henderson tallied nine off of three three-pointers. The Titans had a 41% field goal percentage and three-point percentage in the late half. Fullerton improved their ball control, only logging three turnovers in the second half while forcing UCD to seven. CSF tallied six points off Aggies turnovers.
Ward led the team with 19 points and two steals on the night as well as a season-high two blocks. Cofield led with eight rebounds, tallied 13 points and had a steal. Henderson was almost perfect from downtown, sinking three of his four shots from beyond the arc. Jefferson De La Cruz tallied 10 against the Aggies, putting him over 1,000 career points.
The Titans are back in action on Saturday at UC Riverside at 5 p.m.
