Freshmen Shine in Titans Victory Over CSUN

Impressive performances from two freshmen led the Titans to their second straight conference win.

FULLERTON, Calif. – The Cal State Fullerton Titans took down the Cal State Northridge Matadors by a score of 86-79 for the first time since 2022 for the Titans second straight conference win on Saturday. Freshmen, Christian Williams and Bryce Cofield highlighted the big win. Williams led the Titans with 20+ points for the second straight game while 12 was Cofield's lucky number in his double-double debut at Titan Gym.

CSUN had an impressive first half, staying ahead of the Titans by as many as eight in the first 10 minutes. The Matadors led 19-15 with eight minutes remaining, when they went on a 10-point run over the next two minutes to take a 29-25, 14-point lead. The Titans woke up a bit, posting seven unanswered, but the Matadors remained on top, going into half time with a 40-31 lead.

The Titans shot 37%, going 12 for 32 in the first half. Fullerton struggled at the three-point line in the first half, only making two of their 11 attempts. Landon Seaman led with seven points.

CSF kicked off the second half by chipping away at the Matadors lead. In the first seven minutes, the Titans had tied the game at 49 and took off with confidence from there. Fullerton remembered when they were trailing by 14 in the first half and flipped that on CSUN. The Titans went on an eight-point run to take a 15-point lead with nine minutes remaining. The Matadors continued to score, but their defense was unable to stop Fullerton, resulting in a big 86-71 win at home for the Titans.

Fullerton improved on both sides of the ball in the second half, posting a 57% shooting percentage, going 9 for 16 at the three-point line and nailing 14 of their 20 attempts at the charity stripe. The Titans only had three turnovers in the back half, compared to their eight in the first half.

Overall, the Titans shot 46% from the field, 40% beyond the arc and 67% at the free-throw line. CSF tallied 22 assists and 39 rebounds on the night.

For the second straight game, Williams led the Titans with 20+ points. The freshman tallied 21 points, four steals, four assists and eight rebounds against CSUN. Fellow freshman, Cofield had himself a night on the court. While wearing number 12, Cofield recorded his first collegiate double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds on Saturday.

The Titans look to stay hot as they head to UC Davis on Thursday, Jan. 15 at 6 p.m.
