Titans Claim Second Five-Set Win Over Idaho at Seattle U Invitational

Kaia Herweg powers Titans to victory as Ketesia Hall and Kahea Carvalho record double-doubles

SEATTLE – The Cal State Fullerton women's volleyball team defeated Idaho in a five-set battle  (25-23, 16-25, 21-25, 25-16, 15-12) on Saturday at the Redhawk Center, marking the second five-set win over the Vandals this season.

Ketesia Hall recorded her second double-double of the season with 14 kills (.324) and 18 digs, her first coming in Friday's win over Manhattan with 12 kills and 12 digs. Lira Pukl Verdel (14 kills, 8 digs), Zariah Crosby (13 kills, 3 blocks), Kaia Herweg (12 kills), and Hannah Hass (10 kills, 4 blocks) fueled Fullerton's performance across the net. Kahea Carvalho joined Hall with a double-double of 52 assists and 10 digs.

The Titans (4-2) hit .381 in the opening frame. Hass sealed the 25-23 win with a kill, while Pukl Verdel powered the offense with five early kills. Hall broke a 23-23 tie with a shot just inside the line before Hass secured the win.

Idaho (2-4) responded in the second set, outhitting the Titans .357 to .111 to even the match at 1-1. The Vandals carried their momentum into the third, taking the set 25-21 from the Titans.

The Titans refused to go down without a fight after opening the fourth set trailing 4-0. Fullerton flipped the momentum with an 8-1 run that led to a 25-16 victory on .341 hitting. Herweg was an essential asset to the comeback, finishing with 12 kills on .355 hitting.

Idaho took the first point from the Titans in the fifth set on a service ace, before reentering a back-and-forth match of eight ties and three lead changes. Despite going on a 5-0 run late in the set, Idaho could not outhit the unstoppable arm of Herweg. Herweg recorded the last four Titan points, her 12th kill coming as the match winner.

The Titans ultimately outpaced the Vandals with 69 kills on .277 hitting, setting a new match-high in kills, assists (62) and digs (71).

Fullerton returns to California for The Joust hosted by California Baptist on Sept. 11-13. The Titans open the tournament against Cal Baptist on Thursday at 5:00 p.m.
