LONG BEACH, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton women's volleyball dropped a straight-set battle to crosstown rival Long Beach State, 25-10, 25-19, 25-11, Saturday night at the Walter Pyramid. The Titans move to 6-8 overall and 1-1 in Big West play.
Sarah Schubert paced the Titans with five of the team's 20 kills, while
Lira Pukl Verdel and
Zariah Crosby added four kills apiece.
Ketesia Hall anchored the defense at the net with six blocks, and
Kahea Carvalho posted a team-high 12 assists and eight digs.
In the opening set, Long Beach State jumped to a 3-0 start, but the Titans answered with a three-point run highlighted by a kill from
Kaia Herweg and a block from Hall and
Hannah Hass to close the gap, 10-8. The Beach pieced together a 12-0 run before taking the opening set 25-10.Â
Fullerton responded in set two, battling to three ties and two lead changes. Carvalho delivered an ace, while Schubert and Crosby tallied kills. Hall added a pair of blocks as Fullerton rallied late before falling 25-19.
In the third set, The Beach built an early lead with three straight kills to extend the lead to 20-5. Crosby and Pukl Verdel answered with back-to-back kills, but the Titans could not close the gap, dropping the frame 25-11. The result marked Fullerton's first conference loss of the season and its fifth straight loss against The Beach.
The Titans return to action Friday, Oct. 2, at UC Davis before heading to UC Riverside on Saturday, Oct. 4. The matchup with the Highlanders will mark head coach Nicky Cannon's first return to Riverside since taking over the Fullerton program.
