Box Score DAVIS, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton women's volleyball (6-9, 1-2) dropped a straight-set decision to UC Davis (12-25, 20-25, 8-25) on Thursday night at University Credit Union Center.Â
The Titans fell behind early after opening the match with a 1-0 lead on an Aggies service error. UC Davis (7-4, 3-0) responded with a late 5-0 run to build a 23-10 advantage before securing a 25-12 win in the first set.
Elon Smith (4 kills, 1 block) led the Titans in the opening frame with two of the team's four kills on .250 hitting.Â
UC Davis maintained control in the second set, using a 6-0 run to take a 6-1 lead.
Lira Pukl Verdel (2 kills, 3 blocks) helped keep the Titans within reach, recording her fifth solo block of the season and later teaming with Smith for a block assist to tighten the deficit to 9-7.Â
The Aggies answered by taking four of the next five points for a 13-8 advantage. Fullerton's defense came alive with four total blocks, including Pukl Verdel's two solo blocks and a solo block by
Ketesia Hall, but the Aggies held on for a 25-20 win and a 2-0 match lead.Â
Kahea Carvalho (3 kills, 9 assists)and Smith contributed kills for the Titans in the third set to bring the score to 3-3. The Aggies jumped to a 16-4 lead over the Titans on two lengthy runs before Carvalho stunted their momentum with her third kill of the match. Davis did not allow Fullerton to find a run of their own, taking the next nine out of 12 points for a 25-8 set win and match sweep.Â
The Titans return to action Saturday at 4 p.m. when they visit UC Riverside (4-9, 0-3). The match marks head coach Nicky Cannon's first return to Riverside since being named Fullerton's head coach.Â
