Fullerton Completes Four-Game Sweep at CBU Invitational

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The Cal State Fullerton Titans men's water polo team completed a 4-game sweep at the CBU Invitational after defeating Concordia University Irvine and Occidental College.  The Titans improved to 11-7 for the season and are on a seven-game winning streak.

The Titans edged the Golden Eagles 8-6 in their first game of the day on Day 2 of the CBU Invitational.  The Titans were taking on the Golden Eagles for the second time this season after losing 8-6 in their previous meeting.

The Titans saw multi-goal efforts from Julian Nichols, Nico D'Angelo, and Andrew Barnuevo who each scored a brace.  Francesco Schiaffino and Bende Aubeli each scored as well.

The Titans took an early lead as Julian Nichols scored on the opening drive of the first quarter.  CUI found an equalizer right after.  Francesco Schiaffino gave the Titans a 2-1 lead with 1:01 left in the first quarter.

The Golden Eagles took a 3-2 lead over the Titans midway through the second quarter.  Andrew Barnuevo scored to make it a 3-3 game as the score remained the same heading into halftime.

The Titans struck first in the third quarter behind Bende Aubeli but the Golden Eagles equalized to make it 4-4 on a powerplay midway through the third quarter.  Andrew Barnuevo scored with 21 seconds left in the quarter on a powerplay to once again give the Titans a 5-4 lead.

The Titans finally found some separation in the fourth quarter as Julian Nichols and Nico D'Angelo scored to give the Titans a 7-4 lead with 2:54 left to play.  CUI scored twice in the final minutes to make it a 7-6 game but Nico D'Angelo scored with one second left to close the game out at 8-6.

Ethan Ivey made seven saves inside the cage for the Titans.

Titans 19, Occidental 12
The Titans wrapped up their final game at the Joust with a 19-12 win over Occidental.  The Titans had previously beaten Occidental 22-8 at the Titan Invitational.

Ethan MacLeod and Jacob Hatch led the Titans each with hat tricks. Ethan Merritt, Cameo Bangs, and Nico D'Angelo each picked up a brace. While Togan Ozbek, Luke Vargas, Ryan O'Donovan, and Francesco Schiaffino each tallied a goal.

The Titans had to come from behind in the first quarter.  After Jacob Hatch led the game off with a penalty shot, Occidental scored three goals to take a 3-1 lead over the Titans.  Ryan O'Donovan and Andrew Barnuevo scored before the period ended to make it a 3-3 game after one.

The Titans outscored the Tigers 5-2 in the second quarter.  Togan Ozbek and Nico D'Angelo scored early to put the Titans ahead 5-3.  Occidental got one back before Carmelo Bangs, Andrew Barnuevo, and Ethan MacLeod dented the twine to put the Titans ahead by multiple goals.  The Tigers scored right before the period ended to make it a 8-5 game at halftime.

In the third quarter, the Titans outscored Occidental 5-to-3.   Occidental scored the first goal of the period before Jacob Hatch and Nico D'Angelo scored.  The Tigers scored to make it 10-7 on a powerplay before Carmelo Bangs and Francesco Schiaffino scored to make it a 12-7 game.  The Tigers and Titans would trade one more goal during the period with Luke Vargas scoring his first of the game to make it a 13-8 game.

The Titans outscored the Tigers 6-4 tin the final frame.  Both sides traded blows to start the quarter as Andrew Barnuevo and Jacob Hatch scored.  The Tigers pulled to within four goals at 15-11 before the Titans went on a 4-1 scoring run to end the game.  Ethan Macleod and Ethan Merritt both scored twice during the final 3 minutes.

Noah Stark picked up the win in the cage for the Titans after making 5 saves for the game.

The Titans will return home Wednesday to the Titans Aquatic Center for a midweek match up against McKendree.  The game is set for a 7:05 p.m. start.
