FULLERTON, Calif. – The Fullerton Titans (4-6) faced Occidental (2-10) and Brown (5-0) on Friday in the first day of the Fullerton Tournament. Fullerton posted a combined 30 goals between the two matches while
Andrew Barnuevo led the Titans once again with five goals on the day.
Titans 22, Occidental 8
The Fullerton Titans opened their Friday doubleheader against the Occidental Tigers. Fullerton took down the Tigers by a score of 22-8 and tied their current record of 15 assists in a single game. 12 different Titans scored a goal, turning the big victory a whole team effort.
Barnuevo has been on fire for the Titans the past few games and he definitely didn't leave that spark in Colorado. Barnuevo started off game one with two goals within seconds of each other.
Nico D'Angelo,
Alec Isaacman Marton Thuroczy and
Ethan MacLeod hoped on the scoring train as they each tacked on a goal to put the Titans up 6-1 after the first quarter.
Fullerton's seven-goal second quarter was started by none other than the
Andrew Barnuevo. Freshmen,
Luke Vargas and
Francesco Schiaffino, also found their way to the back of the net in the second frame.
Ryan O'Donovan logged his first goal of the season as he contributed to the big 13-3 lead at the half.
In the second half,
Jacob Hatch and
Jace Peterson tallied two goals a piece. D'Angelo, Barnuevo, Schiaffino and
Francisco Paredes tallied on to the Titans lead, ending in a 22-8 victory over the Tigers.
Fullerton logged 13 steals against Occidental with
Togan Ozbek and Barnuevo each recording two. Barnuevo finished game one with four goals, two assists and two steals while D'Angelo was right behind him with three goals, one assist and one steal.
Ethan Ivey and
Cy Hammerstrom split time in the cage recording 13 saves in the game.
Titans 8, Brown 12
Game two was a little different for the Titans as the Brown defense held them to only eight goals in the match. Fullerton stayed within reach of the Bears throughout the whole match, but it was ultimately being outscored 4-1 by Brown in the third quarter that led to the 8-12 defeat.
The Titans trailed 5-4 after the first half as Isaacman, Nichols,
Carmelo Bangs, and Thuroczy each posted a goal in the low-scoring first half.
Brown opened up the second half by taking a 9-4 lead before D'Angelo could find the back of the cage with just under two minutes to go in the third frame.
Barnuevo fired in his fifth goal of the day and Nichols put two past the goalie in the fourth quarter, but it was not enough to catch up to the Brown Bears.
Fullerton logged seven assists and five steals in game two on Friday. Nichols led the Titans with three goals, one assist, three drawn exclusions and two steals against Brown. Ivey guarded the goal for the entire game and logged eight saves, putting him at 52 on the season.
