Titans Ninth Inning Rally Falls Short Against Hawaii

FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton battled but wasn't able to overcome a six-run deficit, dropping game one to Hawaii at Goodwin Field by a final score of 8-7. With the loss the Titans drop to 26-23 on the year and 16-9 in Big West play.

The Titans jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after scoring two runs in the bottom half of the first inning. Carter Johnstone led-off the game with a walk followed by a double from Maddox Latta to give the Titans second and third with no outs.

Andrew Kirchner stepped to the plate and ripped a single to right field to get the Titans on the board. Kirchner extends his conference-leading RBI total to 62 this season.

Matthew Bardowell put the Titans up 2-0 with a sacrifice fly to center field to bring home Latta from third base.

Hawaii responded with five runs in the top of the second inning to take a 5-2 lead. The Rainbow Warriors recorded five doubles in the inning. Hawaii went on to score two runs in the third and one in the fourth to extend the lead to 8-2.

The Titans answered with one run in the home half of the fourth inning on a bases-loaded walk by Latta to cut the deficit to 8-3. Fullerton missed a golden opportunity to cut into the deficit even more, having bases loaded with just one out.

Fullerton scored another run on a bases-loaded walk in the sixth inning, this time by Bardowell. Once again, the Titans missed a great chance of cutting into the deficit after they had bases loaded with no outs. The Titans left a total of 12 runners on base.

Jason Blood gave the Titans just what they needed to get back in the game, four shutout innings in relief while giving up just one and striking out five batters.

Paul Contreras cut Hawaii's lead to 8-5 in the seventh inning on a solo home run that cleared the clubhouse in left field.

The Titans made a strong push to tie or take the lead in the ninth inning. With Bardowell at second base following a leadoff double, Eli Lopez crushed a ball off the wall in center field which ended in a two-run inside the park home run to make it an 8-7 game.

Isaiah Gomez and Marcos Rosales came through with back-to-back two-out singles to put runners on the corners, however the Titans were unable to push the tying run across.

Fullerton looks to even up the series in game two against Hawaii. First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. at Goodwin Field.
