FULLERTON, Calif. ā Cal State Fullerton knotted up the weekend series against Hawaii at one game apiece after taking game two by a final score of 9-1 Saturday night at Goodwin Field. The Titans improve to 27-23 on the year and 17-9 in Big West play.Ā
Just as they did in game one, the Titans jumped out to an early lead after scoring one run in the first inning. Andrew Kirchner once again got the Titans on the board in the first inning with a double to center field, scoring Carter Johnstone from first base.Ā
Fullerton added two runs in the bottom of the third inning to extend the lead to 3-0. Matthew Bardowell and Johnstone came through with back-to-back RBI singles to drive in Cam Burdick and Maddox Latta.Ā
The Titans took advantage of a Hawaii fielding error in the fourth inning to extend the lead to 4-0. Paul Contreras was able to score from second on Latta single to left field after the Hawaii defender let the ball get past him.Ā
In just his third start of the season, Jayden Harper gave the Titans a gem. The first-year transfer pitched five no-hit innings while allowing just one base runner on a walk in the first inning. Harper retired 14 consecutive batters to finish off his night.Ā
Fullerton blew the game open in the sixth inning, scoring three runs to take a commanding 7-0 lead. Burdick scored the first run of the inning on a throwing error by Hawaii trying to catch Latta stealing second.Ā
With two outs, Bardowell crushed a two-run home run to right center field for his sixth of the season. Bardowell went 2-for-4 on the night with two runs and three RBI. The senior is now hitting .339 on the year with 43 RBI.Ā
Ryan Faulks came on in relief to start the sixth inning and continued what Harper started, pitching a clean inning. The Titans combined no-hitter came to an end with two outs in the seventh inning.Ā
The Titans took a 9-0 lead in the eighth inning on a two-run triple by Kirchner to score Johnstone and Bardowell. Kirchner went 2-for-5 with three RBI Saturday night, extending his confere-leading RBI total to 65. His 65 RBI is the most by a Titan in a season since Nick Ramirez recorded 75 in 2010.Ā
Hawaii got on the board in the top of the ninth inning on a solo home run to make the final score 9-1.Ā
The two teams meet Sunday afternoon for series-deciding game three in the final regular season game of the season at Goodwin Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
Sunday is also senior day at Goodwin Field,Ā the baseball program will honor Maddox Latta, Matthew Bardowell, Ryan Faulks and Walide Perez prior to first pitch.
