SAN DIEGO – Cal State Fullerton defeated San Diego 10-4 Tuesday night at Fowler Park in its final midweek game of the season. With the win the Titans improve to 26-22 on the year.
The Titans broke the scoreless tie in the fourth inning, scoring seven runs on five hits to take a 7-0 lead.
Andrew Kirchner and Matthew Bardowell got the rally started with back-to-back one-out singles before an error by San Diego loaded the bases. Marcos Rosales then hit an infield single to bring home Kirchner before another error by San Diego allowed Bardowell to score to put the Titans up 2-0.
With one out Jack Burke drew a walk to load the bases, leading to a bases loaded walk from Isaiah Gomez to bring in a run. Carter Johnstone came through for the Titans with a two-run single to center field, extending the Titans lead to 5-0.
In his second at-bat of the inning Kirchner recorded his second hit of the inning, this time scoring two runs to put the Titans up 7-0.
San Diego answered with one run in the bottom of the fourth inning and three in the fifth to cut the Titans lead to 7-4.
Chris Hernandez had a strong outing for the Titans in his first career start. Hernandez pitched two shutout innings, giving up just one hit while striking out three batters.
After four scoreless innings for Fullerton, Bardowell hit a two-out double to the gap in left center to bring home Johnstone from third to extend the lead to 8-4 in the eighth inning.
The Titans added two runs in the ninth inning to extend their lead to 10-4. Gomez scored on an RBI fielder's choice by Latta before Kirchner drove in Waldie Perez on an RBI single.
Kirchner went 3-for-5 with a run and three RBI, extending his conference-leading RBI total to 61 on the year.
The Titans return to Big West play this weekend against Hawaii in the final weekend series at Goodwin Field. Senior day will be held prior to Sunday's series finale.
