Titans Late Push Falls Short Against UCSB in Game Three

FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton's late attempt at a comeback fell short, dropping game three to UC Santa Barbara 4-3 Sunday afternoon at Goodwin Field. With the loss the Titans drop to 25-22 on the year and 16-8 in Big West play.

Trailing 4-1 in the eighth inning, Fullerton mounted a late comeback. With runners on first and second, Matthew Bardowell doubled to right field to score Eli Lopez from second base and cut the deficit to 4-2.

Andrew Kirchner immediately followed with a single to left center field, bringing home Carter Johnstone to make it a one run game, 4-3. The Titans sent the game-tying run home on the play in pinch runner Jack Burke, however, he was thrown out at home plate.

The Titans fell behind 1-0 in the top of the first inning. However, Jayden Harper stranded two Gaucho runners on base to limit the damage to just one run.

Fullerton quickly responded with one run in the bottom half of the first on a Kirchner double to bring home Johnstone from second base. Kirchner bounced back after two rough games to open the series, going 3-for-4 with two RBI. The junior has a conference-leading 58 RBI this season.

The Titans were shut down from the first inning until the eighth in large part due to UCSB's Jackson Flora who allowed just one run on three hits in 6.1 innings pitched while striking out a career-high 12 batters. Flora earned the win to improve to 5-2 on the year.

Chad Gurnea (0-1) drew the loss for the Titans after giving up one run on three hits in 2.1 innings while striking out three batters. Gurnea entered the game in relief in the third inning and got the Titans out of a first and second no out jam.

UC Santa Barbara extended its lead to 2-1 on a solo home run in the fourth inning. The Gauchos scored one run in the sixth on a sac fly and one in the eighth on another solo home run to take a 4-1 lead.

Fullerton is back in action Tuesday night as the team heads to San Diego to take on the Toreros in the final midweek game of the season. First pitch is at 6:00 p.m.
