FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton dropped its opening game of the Big West Championship at Goodwin Field Thursday night, losing to Cal Poly by a final score of 7-2.Â
Fullerton fell behind early, giving up one run in the first inning and three in the second to fall behind 4-0. Cal Poly added one run in the fifth, one in the sixth, and one the seventh to take a 7-0 lead.Â
Mikiah Negrete had a tough start, giving up five runs (four earned) on nine hits while walking one and striking out five batters.Â
The Titans were unable to get much going offensively most of the game. Even with 11 hits they couldn't find a way to string hits together to bring in runs, leaving 10 runners on base.Â
Fullerton finally got on the board in the eighth inning with back-to-back solo home runs by Matthew Bardowell and Andrew Kirchner. For Bardowell it is his eighth of the season and 12th for Kirchner.Â
Kirchner ties Scott Hurst's total of 12 home runs in 2017 and now has 70 RBI one the year, the most by a Titan since Nick Ramirez recorded 75 in 2010.Â
The Titans will face No. 4 seed Hawaii Friday night at 7:00 p.m. in an elimination game at Goodwin Field.
