NORTHRIDGE, Calif. ā Cal State Fullerton hit five home runs in game three to defeat CSUN 10-8 Sunday afternoon to secure the series sweep on the road. With the win the Titans improve to 17-15 and 9-6 in Big West play.Ā
Freshman Carter Johnstone hit three of the Titans five home runs, all three being two-run home shots. Johnstone is the first Titan since Christian Colon in 2010 to hit exactly three home runs in a game and the most since Scott Hurst hit four in 2017. The freshman went 4-for-5 at the plate with three runs and a career-high six RBI and now has a tied for team-high six home runs this season.Ā
Fullerton jumped out to an early lead, scoring four runs in the top of the second inning to take a 4-0 lead. After back-to-back walks to start the inning, Marcos Rosales hit a two-run triple to center field to bring home Max Orteg and Eli Lopez.Ā
With two outs and Rosales at third, Carter Johnstone hit an opposite field home run to put the Titans up 4-0.Ā
CSUN answered with two runs in the bottom of the second inning to cut the Titans lead to 4-2.Ā
Andrew Kirchner responded with a leadoff solo home run in the top of the third inning to give Fullerton a 5-2 lead.Ā
The Matadors answered once again, hitting two solo home runs in the bottom of the third to cut the Titans lead to 5-4.Ā
Fullerton countered with a two-run home run by Johnstone, his second of the game, to take a 7-4 lead.Ā
CSUN cut the Titans lead to 7-5 in the sixth inning after scoring one run on a solo home run.Ā
Brady Dockan had a strong outing in relief, allowing just one earned run on three hits while striking out three batters and not issuing a walk. Dockan earned his first collegiate win to improve to 1-0 on the year.Ā
In the seventh inning, it was once again Johnstone getting it done at the plate for the Titans, hitting his third two-run home run of the game to put the Titans up 9-5.Ā
Max Ortega joined the home run parade with a solo shot in the top of the eighth inning to extend the Titans lead to 10-5.Ā
CSUN made an attempt at a comeback, scoring two runs in the eighth and one run in the ninth inning before Andrew Wright put the finishing touches on the game. Wright earned the save for his fifth of the season.Ā
The Titans are back at Goodwin Field next weekend for a three-game nonconference series against Oregon State. The series begins Friday night with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
