FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton dropped game one of its three-game series to No. 8 Oregon State by a final score 7-3 Friday night at Goodwin Field. With the loss the Titans drop to 17-16 on the year.
The Titans jumped out to an early lead on a solo home run by Andrew Kirchner in the bottom of the first inning. Kirchner attacked the first pitch he saw and hit the ball to the arboretum in right field.
Oregon State countered with a solo home run of its own in the top of the second inning to tie the game at 1-1. The Beavers added two more runs in the third inning to take a 3-1 lead.
Fullerton cut the deficit to 3-2 in the fourth inning on another solo home run by Kirchner. The junior recorded his first multi-home run game as a Titan and extended his team-leading RBI total to 41, tying him for second in The Big West.
Mikiah Negrete didn't have his best stuff tonight but continuously battled on the mound to keep the Titans in the game. The southpaw threw 97 pitches in five innings and gave up three runs on five hits while walking five batters and striking out two.
The Titans tied the game in the sixth inning thanks to Maddox Latta. The senior led-off the inning with a single before stealing second base, advancing to third on a wild pitch and scoring on a passed ball. Latta has a team-high 12 stolen bases this season which ranks tied for second in the conference.
Oregon State came back to score two runs in the seventh inning to take a 5-3 lead. With runners on the corners and two outs, the Titans appeared to get out of the inning on a routine ground ball but a fielding error allowed a run to score and kept the inning alive for a second run to cross home plate.
The Beavers added one run in the eighth and one in the ninth to take a 7-3 lead.
Fullerton looks to bounce back in game two against Oregon State Saturday evening at Goodwin Field. First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
