FULLERTON, Calif. ā Cal State Fullerton dropped game two to No. 8 Oregon State by a final score of 17-10 Saturday night at Goodwin Field. With the loss the Titans drop to 17-17 on the year.Ā
The game appeared to be over early as Oregon State scored 12 runs in the third inning to take a 12-0 lead. However, Fullerton mounted a valiant effort at a comeback to cut the deficit to 14-10 in the seventh inning.Ā
The Titans got on the board in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Andrew Kirchner to bring home Marcos Rosales to start chipping into Oregon State's lead.Ā
Fullerton added six runs in the sixth inning to cut the deficit to five runs, 12-7. With Max Ortega at third, Paul Contreras singled through the left side of the infield to drive in the run.Ā
Carter Johnstone stepped to the plate with runners on first and second and hit a ball through the right side of the infield to drive in two runs and make it a 12-4 game.Ā
Following a base hit from Maddox Latta to put two runners on with two outs, Andrew Kirchner ripped a three-run home run to right field to cut the Beavers lead to 12-7. Kirchner went 3-for-5 with a run and four RBI. The junior once again leads The Big West with 45 RBI this season.Ā
Latta went just 1-for-5 Saturday night but extended his on-base streak to 25 games and his hitting streak to 19 games.Ā
Oregon State responded with two runs in the top of the seventh inning to extend its lead to 14-7. A defensive error by the Titans led to the Beavers leadoff hitter reaching safely and ultimately allowing the two runs to score, both of which were unearned.Ā
Jason Blood was key to the Titans comeback efforts, pitching 4.1 innings in relief while giving up just two unearned runs on three hits.Ā
Fullerton had an answer, this time a three-run home run by Paul Contreras to cut the deficit to 14-10. Contreras went 2-for-5 with two runs while tying his career-high with four RBI.Ā
The Beavers extended their lead in the eighth inning with one run on a controversial call. With runners at second and third and one out, Kirchner caught a line drive at first base and threw the ball to third to double up the runner after not tagging which would have ended the top of the inning. The umpires ruled the ball was not caught and the runners were safe at first and home plate. The play was not able to be reviewed.Ā
Oregon State added two more runs in the ninth inning on a two-run home run to push its lead to 17-10.
