NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton scored six runs in the final three innings to pull away late and defeat CSUN 9-3 Saturday evening at Hiegert Field. The Titans improve to 16-15 on the year and 8-6 in Big West play.Â
The Titans took a 3-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning on a three-run home run by Paul Contreras. The first-year transfer went 2-for-5 with a run and a game-high four RBI while hitting his third home run of the season.Â
CSUN came back to score two runs in the home half of the fourth and one run in the fifth to tie the game at 3-3.Â
Fullerton took the lead in the seventh inning on a no-doubt home run to left field by Maddox Latta. The senior went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI including a double and a home run. Latta is now hitting .404 on the year which ranks tied for third in the conference.Â
Fullerton added one run in the eighth inning on a single up the middle from Marcos Rosales to score Matthew Bardowell from third, extending the lead to 6-3.Â
The Titans all but sealed the deal in the top of the ninth inning, scoring three runs to take a 9-3 lead. With the bases loaded Max Ortega was hit by a pitch to drive in a run. Contreras then hit a ball to the second baseman to drive in a run before an error allowed a second run to score.Â
Fullerton's offense had to battle all game before eventually wearing down the CSUN pitchers. The Titans had just three hits midway through the game and tied a season-high in strikeouts with 14 but continuously capitalized with runners on base.Â
Dylan Smith got his fifth start of the year and gave up two earned runs on four hits in 3.2 innings. Gavin Meyer (3-0) earned the win after giving up one earned run on just one hit in 3.1 innings of work. Meyer struck out three batters while not issuing a walk.Â
Ryan Faulks earned his first save of the season, pitching two shutout innings to close out the game. Faulks allowed just one base runner on one hit in the final two innings.Â
The Titans look to sweep the series at CSUN in game three Sunday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
