Game Recap: Women's Water Polo |

Titans Conclude Season With Loss to No. 4 Hawaii at Big West Championship

IRVINE, Calif. - The Cal State Fullerton Titans women's water polo season came to a conclusion on Friday morning as the No. 8 seeded Titans fell to the top seeded University of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine 16-6 in the 1st Round of the Big West Championship.

The Titans were playing the Rainbow Wahine for the third time this season and the second time in the last two weeks.

Hannah Wilson led the Titans with two goals in her final game as a member of the Titans.  Destiny Hernandez, Taylor Mason, Emme Doube-MacLeod and Tess Henke also scored for the Titans in the game. With the Titans starting goalkeeper out for the game, Sienna Bertsch got the start and played the first quarter.  Alexandra Ortiz played the majority of the 2nd through the 4th quarter and made six saves in the cage.

Neither side could score in the opening minutes of the game before the Rainbow Wahine scored twice midway through the first quarter.  They added two goals late in the first quarter to take a 4-0 lead after one.

The Titans defense stymied the Rainbow Wahine offense for most of the second quarter before they finally scored with 1:48 left to play in the first half.  Tess Henke scored the first goal for the Titans with 1:21 left and Hawaii led 5-1 at the half.

Hannah Wilson opened the scoring on a last second looping shot over the keeper to start the third quarter to make it a 5-2 game and give the No. 1 seed a little scare.

However' the Rainbow Wahine scored three goals to retake a 8-2 lead over the Titans.

The Titans offense then drew back-to-back exclusions which led to an open net for Emme Doube-MacLeod to dart one through the goal to make it a 8-3 game. The Rainbow Wahine would score three more times in the period to take an 11-3 advantage after three quarters.

The Titans were outscored 5-to-3 in the final frame as three seniors for the Titans in Taylor Mason, Destiny Hernandez, and Hannah Wilson all scored their final goals of the season.

The Titans concluded the season with an 11-21 overall record and a 0-7 record in conference play.  However, the Titans played on the road nearly the entire season after a pool issue at the Titan Aquatics Center occurred during the second week of the season which forced the Titans to practice and play their home games at Fullerton College. The Titans also played a much stronger schedule than their previous two seasons of existence and fell victim to seven games where they lost by less than 3 goals.
