Defensive Errors Plague Titans in Game Two Loss at Cal Poly

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton baseball dropped game two at Cal Poly Saturday evening by a final score of 10-8. With the loss the Titans drop the series and fall to 4-10 on the year and 0-2 in Big West play.

Cal Poly struck first, scoring a run in the bottom of the second inning to take a 1-0 lead. The Mustangs scored on two fielding errors by the Titans outfield on the same play. With a runner at third and no outs, Derek Turner settled in to get three consecutive strikeouts to limit the damage.

Turner pitched 3.2 innings for the Titans and up seven runs on seven hits, five of which were unearned, while walking one batter and striking out four.

Much like game one of the series against Cal Poly, the Titans found a way to put up a big crooked number to get back in the game. Fullerton plated six runs on six hits in the fourth inning to take a 6-1 lead.

Eli Lopez and Andrew Kirchner started the inning with back-to-back singles before Max Ortega was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Matthew Bardowell got the scoring started with a sacrifice fly to bring home Lopez.

In his first game and second at-bat as a Titan, Paul Contreras crushed a three-run home run to left field to give Fullerton a 4-1 lead.

The Titans weren't done yet. With two outs and Maddox Latta at first, Cam Burdick hit a triple off the wall in left field to extend the Titans lead to 5-1. Marcos Rosales got in on the action with a double down the left field line to bring home Burdick and put the Titans up 6-1.

With a five-run lead the Titans were unable to get a shutout inning it needed in the bottom half of the fourth as Cal Poly matched with six runs of its own to retake a one-run lead, 7-6.

Fullerton had an answer, plating two runs in the fifth to retake the lead, 8-7. Following a one-out walk by Ortega, Contreras came through once again with a double down the left field line to tie the game at 8-8. Carter Johnstone capped off the inning with an RBI single to center field to drive in Contreras and give the Titans the lead.

Contreras had a strong season debut, going 2-for-5 at the plate with two runs and four RBI on a double and home run.

Cal Poly came back to take the lead with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning before adding one run in the seventh and eighth to take an 11-8 lead.

Fullerton's defense had issues all game, committing five errors which led to six unearned runs.

The Titans look to bounce back and avoid the series sweep at Cal Poly Sunday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
