FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton dropped the series finale to CSU Bakersfield by a final score of 6-5 Sunday afternoon at Goodwin Field. The Titans drop to 13-14 on the year and 6-6 in Big West play.
After battling back from an early 4-0 deficit to take the lead, the Titans allowed two runs in the top of the ninth inning to drop game three against Bakersfield.
The Titans had their issues on the mound in the first inning, giving up four runs to fall into an early deficit.
Jason Krakoski struggled in his second start of the season, giving up four runs on two hits while walking three and recording just one out. Derek Turner came on in relief with the bases loaded and one out and allowed just one run to score in the first. Turner pitched 4.2 shutout innings while giving up just two hits.
As it has all season, the Titans offense battled to get back in the game. The Titans scored two runs in the second inning to cut the deficit to 4-2.
Marcos Rosales got the scoring started with an RBI single to bring home Max Ortega and get the Titans on the board. Fullerton added a second run on a productive infield out by Isaiah Gomez to score Eli Lopez from third.
The Titans scored two more runs in the bottom of the third inning to tie the game at 4-4. With the bases loaded Matthew Bardowell was hit by a pitch to drive in Carter Johnstone. Fullerton scored the tying run on a double play that allowed Maddox Latta to score from third.
Fullerton took the lead in the fourth inning on an RBI single from Johnstone to score Gomez from second base. Johnstone went 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI.
After battling back the Titans had opportunities to extend the lead but failed to bring in runs with runners in scoring position, leaving a total of nine runners on base.
Ryan Faulks (0-1) drew the loss for the Titans after giving up two runs in the ninth inning. Michael Riley (3-2) earned the win for Bakersfield, pitching 4.1 shutout innings to close out the game.
The Titans hit the road next week for two midweek games in Arizona against Arizona State on Tuesday and Grand Canyon on Wednesday. Fullerton returns to conference play next weekend at CSUN.
