Titans Score Season-High 18 Runs in Series-Clinching Win at UC Riverside

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton scored a season-high 18 runs in its series-clinching win over UC Riverside Saturday night at the Riverside Sports Complex. The Titans improve to 9-13 on the year and 3-5 in Big West play. 

Freshman Dylan Smith got his second career start Saturday night and gave the Titans 4.1 shutout innings, allowing just two hits while issuing two walks and striking out five batters. In his last five appearances, Smith has allowed just one run while striking out 16 batters in 11.1 innings pitched.

The two teams were scoreless through three innings before Eli Lopez had a productive infield out to score Matthew Bardowell in the fourth inning to give the Titans a 1-0 lead. 

The Titans scored four runs in the fifth inning to extend their lead to 5-0. Fullerton took advantage of a Highlanders defensive error following a base hit by Carter Johnstone to get the scoring started in the fifth. 

Later in the inning with runners on first and second Andrew Kirchner singled to center field to bring home Johnstone and extend the Titans lead to 3-0. Kirchner now has a conference-leading 34 RBI this season. 

Matthew Bardowell immediately followed with a two-run single to center field, scoring Maddox Latta and Kirchner to put Fullerton up 5-0. 

The Titans added one run in the seventh inning on an RBI single by Marcos Rosales to score Bardowell. Rosales pinch hit in the seventh and went 2-for-2 with two runs, two RBI and a walk. 

In the eighth inning, the Titans bats blew the game open with nine runs on seven hits to take a commanding 15-0 lead. 

Following a leadoff triple from Cam Burdick, Johnstone hit a sacrifice fly to center field to drive in the first run of the inning while extending the Titans lead to 7-0. Burdick went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with three runs and an RBI. 

With the bases empty and one out, Latta and Kirchner got on base thanks to a base hit and a walk. Bardowell once again came through for the Titans with a single to right field to score Latta and make it an 8-0 game. 

Lopez came into the game with an 18-game on-base streak and was 0-for-4 before doubling down the left field line to extend his on-base streak to 19 while driving in two runs to extend the lead to 10-0. 

Contreras, Burdick and Johnstone continued the scoring with three consecutive singles to score three runs and put the Titans up 13-0. 





Fullerton scored two more runs in the inning on a wild pitch and a bases-loaded hit by pitch by Bardowell to cap off the nine-run inning. Bardowell 3-for-5 with three runs and a tied for game-high four RBI. 

UC Riverside got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to cut the Titans lead to 15-2. 

The Titans added three more runs in the eighth inning on an RBI single by Rosales and a two-run single from Johnstone. The freshman Johnstone went 3-for-6 with two runs and a tied for game-high four RBI. 



Fullerton finished with a season-high 18 runs on a season-high 21 hits. The Titans previous totals were 14 runs and 17 hits. 

Jason Blood earned the win to improve to 2-2 on the year after pitching 2.2 shutout innings while allowing just three hits and striking out three batters. 

The Titans look to secure the series sweep in game three Sunday afternoon at the Riverside Sports Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
