Fullerton Secures Series Sweep with Game Three win at UC Riverside

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton defeated UC Riverside 10-5 in the series finale Sunday afternoon at the Riverside Sports Complex to secure the series sweep. The Titans improve to 10-13 and 4-5 in Big West play.Ā

Fullerton jumped out to a 1–0 lead in the top of the second inning on an RBI double by Paul Contreras to score Max Ortega from second base.Ā

UC Riverside responded with one run in the home half of the inning to tie the game at 1-1. The Highlanders scored without recording a hit in the inning.Ā

Jason Krakoski made his first start of the season and first appearance since Feb. 28 at Wichita State. Krakoski gave up one unearned run in two innings pitched while walking one and striking out one.Ā

The Titans continued their ways from Saturday night's game, putting up a four-spot in the third inning to jump out to a 5-1 lead.Ā

With runners on the corners and no outs, Andrew Kirchner drove in Carter Johnstone with a productive infield out. Kirchner now has a conference-leading 35 RBI this season.Ā

Fullerton took advantage of a UC Riverside fielding error which would have ended the inning while allowing Matthew Bardowell to score from third and put the Titans up 3-1.Ā

Eli Lopez and Marcos Rosales recorded back-to-back RBI hits to make the Highlanders pay for the mistake while extending Fullerton's lead to 5-1.Ā

Maddox Latta added to the Titans lead with a three-run home run in the top of the fourth inning. Latta went 2-for-4 on the day with two runs and a game-high three RBI. The senior leads the team with a .395 batting average.Ā

UC Riverside responded with a three-run home run of its own in the bottom of the fourth to cut the Titans lead to 8-4.Ā

Fullerton got one run back in the fifth inning on a solo home run by Carter Johnstone, his second of the season. The Freshman had another impressive day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a game-high three runs and an RBI.Ā

The Highlanders cut the Titans lead to 9-5 with one run in the bottom of the seventh inning.Ā

The Titans got the run right back as Bardowell scored Latta with a double to left center field to extend the lead to 10-5.

Fullerton scored double-digit runs and recorded double-digit hits in all three games against UC Riverside while out scoring the Highlanders 40-9.Ā

Up next for the Titans is a midweek game against San Diego Tuesday night at Goodwin Field. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m.
