WICHITA, Kan. – Cal State Fullerton baseball took the series finale against Wichita State Sunday afternoon by a final score of 7-5 at Eck Stadium to clinch the series. The Titans improve to 3-8 on the year with the win.Â
With the Titans trailing by two runs in the top of the seventh inning Isaiah Gomez hit a three-run home run to left field to put Fullerton up 6-5. Gomez hit his first career home run while going 2-for-4 on the day.Â
Two batters later, Marcos Rosales hit a solo home run to left field field to extend the lead to 7-5. Rosales leads the team with four home runs this season.Â
The Titans didn't look back after taking the lead as the bullpen shut out Wichita State for the remainder of the game. Fullerton's bullpen was key to Sunday's victory, pitching six shutout innings.Â
Ryan Faulks pitched two innings while giving up just one hit. Dylan Goff pitched two innings while giving up two hits. Chris Hernandez gave up one hit in the eighth inning, setting up Gavin Meyer to earn the save with a clean ninth inning. Goff earned the win to improve to 1-1 this season.
Fullerton got off to a good start, scoring two runs in the top half of the first inning to take an early lead. The Titans began the game with three straight singles by Rosales, Eli Lopez and Andrew Kirchner. Kirchner's single drove in Lopez for the first run of the game. The Titans then scored on a double play that allowed Rosales to come home from third.Â
Wichita State answered with one run in the home half of the first to cut the Titans lead to 2-1. The Shockers added three runs in the second and one in the third to take a 5-2 lead.Â
The Titans got a run back in the fifth on an RBI double by Matthew Bardowell to score Kirchner from second base and cut the deficit to 5-3. Bardowell went 3-for-5 on the day with one run, a RBI and two doubles. Kirchner went 1-for-2 with a run, RBI, two walks and a hit by pitch.Â
Fullerton returns home to Goodwin Field Tuesday night for a midweek game against San Diego State. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m.
