FULLERTON, Calif. āĀ Cal State Fullerton baseball took down the San Diego State Aztecs by a final score of 7-1 Tuesday night at Goodwin Field for its first home victory this season. The Titans extend their winning streak to three games and improve their overall record to 4-8 on the year.Ā
The Titans came out swinging with back-to-back singles from Cam Burdick and Eli Lopez to open the game. It was followed by a two-run single to center field by Andrew Kirchner to bring in Burdick and Lopez to take a 2-0 lead.Ā
Jayden Harper got his first start of the year and gave the Titans two scoreless innings of work. He allowed just two hits and recorded one strikeout on his way to earning his first Division I win on the mound.Ā
Harper made quick work of the Aztecs in the first inning, retiring the side in order on just eight pitches. In the second, with runners on first and second, Harper induced a ground ball double play to get out of the jam and keep the Aztecs off the board.Ā
Ryan Faulks came in relief in the fifth with runners on the corners and two outs. He was able to get a popup to second to end the threat and keep the Titans lead at 2-0.
In the sixth, the Aztecs were able to get on the board and cut the Titans lead in half to make it a 2-1 game.Ā
Kirchner began a two-out rally in the seventh inning with a single, which was then followed by a double into the left center gap by Maddox Latta. With runners on second and third and a full count, Matthew Bardowell singled through the right side of the infield to bring in Kirchner and Latta to extend the Titans lead to 4-1.
In the eighth, Jakob Schardt and Isaiah Gomez led off the inning with two singles to put runners on the corners for the Titans. Cam Burdick then dropped a beautiful sac bunt, bringing home Schardt. Later in the inning, Kirchner smoked a double off the center field wall to bring in two more runs to make it 7-1 Titans.Ā
With four more runs batted in, Kirchner extends his team-leading RBI total to 21, which ranks him tied for 13th in the nation. It also marks his fourth game this season with four RBI while going 3-for-5 at the plate with a run scored.Ā
Dylan Goff, Andrew Wright, and Dylan Smith slammed the door in the final three innings of the game to help secure the win. They combined to allow just one hit and strikeout six in the final three innings.Ā
