Eight-Run Sixth Inning Pushes Titans to Victory Over UCSD in Series Finale

FULLERTON, Calif. – The Titans used an eight-run sixth inning to pull away from UC San Diego and earn their first conference win of the season with a 12-5 victory Sunday afternoon at Goodwin Field. The Titans improve to 6-13 and 1-5 in Big West play.

Fullerton's first inning issues on the mound continued in the series finale as UC San Diego jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first.

The Titans came back to score two runs and tie the game at 2-2 in the third. Isaiah Gomez led-off the inning with a walk before a sacrifice bunt got him in scoring position. Carter Johnstone got the Titans on the board with an RBI double down the right field line to bring home Gomez.

With two outs Andrew Kirchner hit a high fly ball which caused miscommunication in the field from UCSD, leading to an RBI double to score Johnstone from second and tie the game at 2-2.

After giving up two runs in the first inning, Brady Dockan settled down on the mound and gave Fullerton 3.1 innings allowing just the two runs on four hits while striking out three and not issuing a walk.

Kirchner came through for the Titans again in the fifth inning, hitting a two-run double with two outs to score Cam Burdick and Eli Lopez to put Fullerton up 4-2. Kirchner went 2-for-5 Sunday with three RBI. The junior extends his conference-leading RBI total to 30 and is hitting .358 which ranks second on the team.

UC San Diego responded with one run in the top of the sixth on a solo home run to cut Fullerton's lead to 4-3.

The Titans didn't let UC San Diego hang around any longer, scoring eight runs on nine hits in the home half of the sixth to open a commanding 12-3 lead.

Marcos Rosales opened the inning with a leadoff triple before Isaiah Gomez single through the middle of the infield to bring him home.

With Gomez at first base, Burdick doubled off the wall in left field to put runners on the corners with no outs. The freshman Johnstone followed with a double to left center to score two runs and put the Titans up 7-3. Johnstone had another good game at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two runs and three RBI.

Following a groundout and strikeout, Fullerton put together a five-run two-out rally starting with an RBI double from Matthew Bardowell to score Johnstone from third base.

Maddox Latta kept the inning going with a triple to the right field corner, bringing home Bardowell and pushing the lead to 9-3.

With Latta at third, Max Ortega hit an RBI single to right field to put Fullerton up 10-3.

The Titans batted around the order as Rosales came to the plate and hit a double to left field to score Ortega from first base. Rosales had a much needed bounce back game, going 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.

Fullerton capped off the sixth where it started the inning, with Gomez bringing home Rosales, this time on a double to center field to extend the lead to 12-3.

Gavin Meyer earned the win for the Titans to improve to 2-0 on the year. Meyer allowed just one run on two hits in 2.1 innings pitched while striking out four batters and not issuing a walk.

Jason Blood had a strong showing in relief, tossing 2.1 shutout innings while giving up just two hits. The Titans pitching staff combined to walk just one batter while striking out 12.

UC San Diego scored two runs in the ninth inning to cut the Titans lead to 12-5.

Fullerton looks to carry its momentum into Tuesday night's matchup against UNLV at Goodwin Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
