FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton recorded its second shutout of the season and first at Goodwin Field on its way to a 4-0 win over UNLV Tuesday night. The Titans improve to 7-13 on the year with the win.Â
The Titans jumped out to an early lead, scoring one run in the bottom of the first inning on a productive infield out by Andrew Kirchner to score Carter Johnstone from first base. Kirchner leads the team and Big West Conference with 31 RBI this season.Â
In his first collegiate start, freshman Landon Martin gave the Titans two shutout innings while giving up just one hit and striking out two batters. Martin earned the win to improve to 1-0 on the year.Â
Fullerton extended its lead in the fourth inning on one of the strangest three-run scoring plays seen. With runners on second and third and on out, Niko Lambardi laid down a bunt looking to score Marcos Rosales from third. However, the bunt went directly to the pitcher which led to a pickle between third and home with Rosales.Â
After Rosales reached safely back at third, UNLV attempted to throw out Paul Contreras at second but an errant throw went over the second baseman and all the way to the wall in right field which allowed all three runs to score. The Titans took a 4-0 lead from three unearned runs in the fourth.Â
From that point on the game was all on the Titans pitching staff as Derek Turner, Ryan Faulks and Jason Blood combined to allow just two hits over the next five innings.Â
Blood threw three no-hit innings to close out the game while walking just one batter and striking out a tied for season-high five on his way to earning his first save of the season. Blood came into the game in a tough spot, entering with a runner at first, no outs and behind in a 2-0 count and proceeded to strike out the side in the seventh inning to keep the shutout going.
Maddox Latta had another impressive game at the plate, going 2-for-2 with two walks. The senior leads the team with a .373 batting average and 19 runs while adding six RBI and 12 walks this season.Â
Fullerton returns to Big West play this weekend as the team hits the road for a three-game series at UC Riverside beginning Friday night.
