Baseball Loses Game Two and Series to UCSD

FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton baseball dropped game two and the series to UC San Diego Saturday evening by a final score 9-5 at Goodwin Field. The Titans drop to 5-13 on the year and 0-5 in Big West play.

First inning woes on the mound came back to bite the Titans yet again as UC San Diego jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the top of the first.

Derek Turner got the start for the Titans and allowed five earned runs on two hits while walking three batters and hitting another in his one inning of work.

The Titans, however, quickly responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to cut the deficit to 5-3. Eli Lopez was hit by a pitch to leadoff the inning before Maddox Latta crushed his first home run of the season to right center field.

Andrew Kirchner kept the inning going with a double to right field, setting up his running mate Matthew Bardowell for an RBI single to make it a 5-3 game.

With two outs and runners on the corners, Kirchner hit another double to right field to bring home Lopez and Latta and tie the game at 5-5. Kirchner went 3-for-5 with a run and two RBI to extend his team-leading RBI to 27 which also ranks tied for first in The Big West.

UC San Diego immediately responded with one run in the top of the fifth on a solo home run to regain the lead, 6-5. The Tritons added another solo shot in the sixth to extend their lead to 7-5.

Dylan Smith had another strong outing in relief for Fullerton. The freshman allowed just one run on two hits in three innings pitched while striking out a career-high six batters. In his last four appearances (seven innings), Smith has allowed just one run while striking out 11 batters.

UC San Diego tacked onto its lead with two runs in the eighth inning to go up 9-5 late in the game.

The Titans had a couple key chances to take the lead or tie the game that they were unable to capitalize on as they left the bases loaded in the third inning while also squandering a one-out triple from Carter Johnstone in the fifth.

Payton Hawkinson (0-2) drew the loss after giving up just one run on two hits in three innings pitched. Chapman Weber (1-0) earned the win for UCSD after pitching just 0.2 innings and giving up one run.

Fullerton looks to stave off a series sweep in game three against UC San Diego Sunday afternoon at Goodwin Field. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
