Titans Stumble at Home Against UC San Diego

FULLERTON, Calif. - The Cal State Fullerton Titans women's basketball team were defeated 69-46 by the UC San Diego Tritons on Saturday afternoon at Titan Gym.

With Cal Poly winning at Cal State Bakersfield on Saturday,  the Titans are now 2 games behind the Mustangs for a chance at getting the 8th and final seed for the Big West Championship in Henderson, Nevada.

Aaliyah Stanton led the Titans with 18 points as she was back in double-figures.  Maddy Tauro chipped in with 11 points off the bench and 7 rebounds. The Tritons two main scorers Sabrina Ma (23 points) and Sumayah Sugapong (16 points) led them in the win over the Titans.

The Titans had a good start to the game as they led early through the first quarter.  Aixchel Hernandez and Aaliyah Stanton scored the first 12 points for the Titans.

The Tritons went on a 14-0 to take a 20-10 lead in the first.  The Titans scored the final five points of the period as Maddy Tauro completed a three point play to make it a 20-15 game after the end of the first.

The Tritons outscored the Titans 19-to-11 in the second quarter.  They extended their lead to double figures before Aaliyah Stanton made two layups to get the Titans some points on the board.

The Tritons led 39-26 heading into the halftime break.

The Titans tried making a comeback in the third quarter as they cut the lead back down to 11 points with 3:28 left in the quarter.

However, UCSD score the final 8 points of the quarter to take a 53-34 lead into the final fram. Maddy Tauro scored six of her 11 points in the final quarter.

The Titans still have everything to play for as they aren't quite mathematically eliminated yet from qualifying for the Big West Championship.  They need to win out against Cal Poly on Thursday and at UC Riversde on the road on Saturday.  Cal Poly needs to lose both of their next games against the Titans and Long Beach State to give the Titans the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Mustangs.

The Titans will honor their two seniors. Aixchel Hernandez and Emily Strachan on Thursday night against Cal Poly in a pregame ceremony.
