Titans Shutout Shockers to Take Game Two in Wichita

WICHITA, Kan. – Cal State Fullerton baseball shutout Wichita State 5-0 to take game two of the series Saturday afternoon at Eck Stadium. The Titans improve to 2-8 on the year with the win.

The two teams were in a pitchers' duel for a majority of the game until the Titans broke the scoreless tie in the top of the seventh inning. With the bases loaded Andrew Kirchner put a ball in play which resulted in a fielding error, allowing Matthew Bardowell to score from third and give Fullerton a 1-0 lead.

The Shockers were held scoreless thanks to Derek Turner, Jason Blood and Andrew Wright. Turner got the start for the Titans and pitched 3.2 innings, allowing five hits while walking two batters and striking out four.

Jason Blood entered the game in a key situation for the Titans, coming on in relief in the fourth inning with the bases loaded and two outs. Blood made quick work of the batter to get Fullerton out of the jam. The senior gave up just three hits in 3.2 innings pitched while striking out four and not issuing a single walk. At one point, Blood retired 11 consecutive batters. Blood earned the win to improve to 1-1 this season.

Similar to Blood's circumstances, Wright entered the game with the bases loaded and just one out in the eighth inning. Wright got a strikeout before inducing a ground ball to once again get Fullerton out of a jam. The sophomore earned the save, his second this season.

Fullerton added to its lead in the eighth inning on an RBI double by Bardowell to bring home Maddox Latta from second base and extend the lead to 2-0.

The Titans scored three insurance runs in the top of the ninth inning to take a 5-0 lead. With runners on first and second Latta came through with an RBI single through the left side of the infield to bring home Eli Lopez from second base. The throw home got away from the Shockers catcher, allowing the runners to advance to second and third.

Marcos Rosales and Latta would end up scoring on a passed ball and a wild pitch to give Fullerton a 5-0 lead going into the bottom of the ninth.

Lopez had a strong day at the plate for the Titans, going 3-for-5 with a run. The junior leads the team with a .378 batting average this season.

Fullerton looks to take game three of the series against Wichita State Sunday morning. First pitch is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. PT.
