Titans Hang On for Win over CSUN at Home

FULLERTON, Calif. - The Cal State Fullerton Titans women's basketball team defeated the CSUN Matadors 65-61 at Titan Gym on Thursday night to pick their third conference win of the season.

The Titans avenged a 79-76 overtime loss that they suffered at CSUN in their first game back from the winter break.

After trailing by two points with 3:56 left in the game, the Titans went on a 6-0 run and led by four points at 62-58 with 1:41 left in the game.  The Matadors cut the lead to one point to make it 62-61 after Kelly Tumlin drilled her fifth three pointer of the quarter.  The Matadors tried doing what they did in the previous game by fouling the Titans and sending them to the free throw line but this time Emily Strachan nailed both her free throws to extend the lead back to 64-61.  The Titans played great defense on the other as Aixchel Hernandez blocked the Matadors 3-point attempt.  Eva Levingston went 1-for-2 from the free throw line after grabbing the loose ball from Hernandez's block and she iced the game by making at least one free throw and extending the lead to 65-61 and making it a two possession game.

Emily Strachan led the Titans with a new career high 24 points.  She was clutch down the stretch with free throws and went 11-for-12 at the line.  Aaliyah Stanton was back to scoring in double figures and had 14 points.  Aixchel Hernandez had 10 points and a new career high 6 blocks. The Titans shot 37.3% from the floor while the Matadors shot 36.2% from the floor.  The Titans shot poorly beyond the arc going just 1-for-12 while the Matadors made 8 three pointers to keep themselves in the game.  The Matadors outrebounded the Titans 47-to-34.  The Titans benefited from 26 turnovers from the Matadors and scored 24 points off them.

The Titans and Matadors traded baskets early to start the game.  Aaliyah Stanton and Emily Strachan did the scoring early for the Titans.

After the first quarter, the Titans led 16-13 over the Matadors.

The Titans outscored the Matadors 10-to-9 in the second quarter and led 26-22 at halftime.

The Titans extended their lead to 8 points early in the third quarter before the Matadors begin chipping their way back into the game.  The Matadors cut the lead to two points at 37-35 with less than three minutes in the third period before the Titans got much needed baskets from Aixchel Hernandez, Emily Strachan, and Aaliyah Stanton. The Titans led 45-37 at the end of the third quarter.

The Matadors started the four quarter strong after Kelly Tumlin caught fire for CSUN.  She made three straight three pointers to tie the game at 50-50 with 5:15 left to go in the game.  The Matadors took the lead (58-56) with 3:46 left to go after another triple from Tumlin. The Titans got a clutch tying basket from Aixchel Hernandez to make it 58-58.  The Titans then went on their 6-0 run to make it a 4 point lead with 1:41 left to go.

The Titans were able to hold onto the lead during the final stretch despite CSUN's making a late three pointer and fouling the Titans and making them shoot free throws again. The Titans were able to hold their nerve late and pick up their third conference win.

The Titans head to UC Davis on Saturday.  Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m. at the University Credit Union Center.
