FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton baseball fell to USC by a score of 5-3 in its midweek matchup Tuesday night at Goodwin Field. The Titans drop to 1-7 on the year with the loss.Â
Once again, Fullerton was unable to get out of the first inning without giving up a run. USC scored two runs in the top of the first on back-to-back solo home runs to take an early 2-0 lead.Â
The Titans quickly responded with one run in the home half of the first on an Andrew Kirchner RBI single to score Cam Burdick and make it to a 2-1 game.Â
USC got the run right back in the top of the second inning to retake a two-run lead, 3-1. The Trojans extended their lead to 4-1 in the fifth inning on another solo home run.
Fullerton made it a one run game in the sixth inning on an RBI fielder's choice from Jack Burke which resulted in two runs scoring due to an error by USC's infield, making it a 4-3 game. The Titans let a golden opportunity to tie or take the lead slip away as back-to-back runners were thrown out on the base paths to end the inning after having runners on the corners with just one out.Â
Maddox Latta was a bright spot for the Titans at the plate Tuesday night, going 3-for-3 with a walk and a run scored. The senior is hitting .303 on the year with eight runs and three RBI.Â
The Trojans extended their lead to 5-3 in the eighth inning after an infield error by the Titans extended the inning, leading to one run scoring.Â
Dylan Smith drew the loss for the Titans after giving up two earned runs in the first inning on three hits. USC's Garren Rizzo earned the win to improve to 4-0 on the year while Ethan Hedges earned his third save of the season.Â
The Titans head back out on the road this weekend for a three-game series at Wichita State beginning Friday at 1:00 p.m. PT.
