NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. - The Cal State Fullerton Titans women's water polo split the day in Day 2 at the Barbara Kalbus Invitational. They fell to No. 8 UC Davis 15-10 in the morning before coming back and defeating RV Pomona Pitzer 10-9. This is the Titan's first ever win at the Barbara Kalbus Invitational after going 0-4 last season.Â
After Saturday's win in their third game of the tournament, the Titans will take part in the 13th place game against No. 18 UC Santa Barbara.  The Titans battled the Gauchos before to a 9-8 loss at the Triton Invitational earlier this month.
Cal State Fullerton 10, No.8 UC Davis 15
It was all knotted up 8-8 at halftime against the Aggies, before the Titans ran out of gas and were outscored 7-to-2 in the second half in the loss against UC Davis
Destiny Hernandez led the Titans with 3 points (2 goals, 1 assist), Mia Solarzano and Emme Doube-Macleod led the team with 2 goals, and
Delaney Latham,
Eden Tal,
Jade Lonzo,
Lacey Hall, and
Elise Bliss all found the back of the net against the Aggies.Â
Annabelle Sherman made 11 saves in the cage for the Titans.
In the first quarter, the Titans and Aggies traded blows as both sides scored four goals a piece. Â
Mia Solorzano,
Destiny Hernandez,
Eden Tal, and
Jade Lonzo all scored in the first quarter.
The second quarter was the same as each team responded with a goal if the other side scored. Â
Emme Doube-MacLeod started the scoring in the second,
Delaney Latham, Doube-MacLeod again, and Solorzano also scored in the second quarter.
The Aggies scored the first three goals in the third quarter before
Elise Bliss cut the lead back to 11-9. The Aggies finished the third quarter on top 13-9 after outscoring the Titans 5-to-1 in the period.
Lacey Hall scored the opening goal in the fourth quarter to make it a 13-10 game but the Titans wouldn't find the back of the net again as the Aggies outscored them 2-to-1 to take the game 15-10 over the Titans.
Cal State Fullerton 10, RV Pomona Pitzer 9
The Titans had to rally back in their second game of the day against Pomona Pitzer to pull out the win. Â The Titans were trailing 6-3 at halftime and at one pont 8-3 in the third quarter. Â The Titans went on a 6-1 scoring run over the final 12 minutes to earn the win over the Sagehens.
Mia Solorzano and
Ileina Hatori led the team with three points against Pomona Pitzer. Â Hatori scored a hat trick and
Mia Solorzano scored two goal and one assist.Â
Annabelle Sherman made 12 saves in the cage for the Titans.
The Sagehens led 2-1 after the first quarter with
Neida Torres scoring the only goal for the Titans.
Eden Tal scored on a powerplay to start the second quarter but the Sagehens built a 5-2 lead midway through the quarter. Â
Destiny Hernandez scored to make it 5-3 but the Sagehens took a 6-3 lead lead into halftime.
The third quarter started poorly for the Titans as the Sagehens built a 8-3 lead wth 4:44 left in the quarter. Â The Titans then went on a scoring run as
Jade Lonzo,
Ileina Hatori,
Emme Doube-MacLeod and Hatori scored again to close the third quarter down 8-7.
Hatori got her hat-trick to start the fourth quarter to tie the game at 8-8. Â The Titans took the lead briefly as Mia Solarzano scored on a powerplay to make it 9-8 before the Sagehens tied the game at 9-9. Â Solarzano scored a penalty for the Titans with 2:41 to give them the lead back at 10-9. The Titans defense was able to shutdown the Sagehens offense over the final 2 and a half minutes to secure theirst win ever at the Barbara Kalbus Invitational.
The Titans will take on No. 18 UC Santa Barbara in the 13th place game on Sunday. The game is scheduled to start at 10:20 AM. The Titans played the Gauchos earlier this season when they fell in a narrow 9-8 loss at the Triton Invitational.Â
