Seven Home Runs Power Fullerton Past Fresno State to Claim First Win of Season

FRESNO, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton baseball came out with haymakers looking to secure its first winning of the season, hitting seven home runs including three in the first inning en route to a 14-3 win over Fresno State Saturday evening. The Titans improve to 1-5 on the year with the win.

The Titans jumped all over Fresno State in the first inning, scoring seven runs on three home runs. With the bases loaded and no outs, Andrew Kirchner stepped to the plate and blasted a grand slam to left field to give Fullerton the start it needed.

Max Ortega wasted no time putting the Titans up 5-0 after sending the ball off the scoreboard in left field, giving Fullerton back-to-back home runs for the first time since Mar. 13, 2021 against Arizona State.

Following a Maddox Latta single, Matthew Bardowell launched another ball out of the stadium for the Titans third home run of the inning while extending the lead to 7-0.

Fullerton forced Fresno State to go to its bullpen in the first inning after its starter was unable to record an out.

After taking an early 7-0 lead and the Titans having struggles in the first inning defensively through the first five games of the season, Mikiah Negrete was sure not to give the Bulldogs any momentum as he quickly retired the first three batters.

Negrete (1-1) gave the Titans four perfect innings on his way to a second straight quality start. The junior allowed three runs on four hits while striking out seven and walking just one batter in six innings of work.

Freshman Carter Johnstone got in on the action in the second inning, hitting his first career home run to extend the Titans lead to 8-0. The Titans added to their lead later in the inning on a Latta sacrifice fly to bring home Marcos Rosales from third.

After a couple scoreless innings Bardowell came back in the fifth inning with his second two-run home run of the game to put the Titans up 11-0. Bardowell went 2-for-4 on the day with two runs and three RBI, tying his career-high in runs and hits from last season.

Fresno State got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning with two runs to cut the Titans lead to 11-2. Negrete limited the damage to just two runs after giving up the first run to the second batter of the inning and facing bases loaded with no outs.

The Titans had an answer, this time a solo home run from Rosales to lead off the inning. After hitting a three-run home run Friday night, Rosales now has home runs in back-to-back games. The redshirt freshman went 2-for-3 Saturday with three runs, an RBI and reached base on a hit by pitch.

The Bulldogs got the run back in the home half of the sixth with a solo home run of their own. However, the Titans countered with their seventh home run of the game in the top of the seventh. In his first full game of the season, Cam Burdick hit the two-run home run to extend the Titans lead to 14-3.

The Titans seven home runs in a game is the most dating back to 2002. Fullerton's most home runs in a game dating back to 2002 is five which was done four times, last on May 14, 2017 against UC Santa Barbara.

Andrew Wright pitched the final three innings for the Titans to earn his first career save. Wright allowed just two hits while striking out two Bulldogs.

Fullerton looks to carry its momentum into Sunday's rubber game against Fresno State. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m.
