Titans Lose to No. 1 Stanford to open Barbara Kalbus Invitational

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. - For the second straight season, the Titans had the privilege of opening up the prestigious Barbara Kalbus Invitational by taking on the No. 1 team in the country.  The Titans fell to the No. 1 Stanford Cardinal 19-6 on Friday at the Marian Bergeson Aquatics Center.  

Tess Henke led the Titans with three points on three assists for the game.  Ileina Hatori led the Titans with two goals.  Taylor Mason, Eden Tal, Hannah Wilson, and Elise Bliss also found the back of the net during the game. Annabelle Sherman made four saves in the cage in the first three quarters and Sienna Bertsch played the fourth quarter for the Titans.

The Titans struggled to generate any offensive momentum in the first half as Stanford outscored them 5-0 in the first quarter and 6-0 in the second quarter to take an 11-0 lead into half time.

After Stanford scored the first two goals of the third quarter, the Titans finally found the back of the net for the first time after Ileina Hatori scored.  The Titans then scored three straight goals after that as Eden Tal, Hannah Wilson, and Taylor Mason dented the twine.  The Cardinal got one goal back before the quarter ended as the Titans finished the third quarter outscoring the Cardinal 4-to-3 and Stanford led 14-4 after the period ended.  

The Titans got two goals in the fourth quarter as Stanford outscored them 5-to-2 in the final frame.  Ileina Hatori added her second goal of the game and Elise Bliss dented the twine in the fourth and final frame.

The Titans who are now in the loser's bracket of the tournament will play the rest of their games this weekend at the Marian Berguson Aquatics Center.  They will play two games tomorrow.  The first game will be against the No. 8 UC Davis who loss to UC San Diego on Friday. That game will take place at 10:40 a.m.

If the Titans win the game against UC Davis they will play at 5:20 PM against the winner of Pomona Pitzer and LMU.  If the Titans lose to UC Davis, they will play the loser of Pomona Pitzer and LMU at 4:00 PM.
