Box Score FULLERTON, Calif. - With only six games remaining in the Titans' 2024-2025 campaign, the Cal State Fullerton men's basketball team came into Thursday night's matchup looking to set a physical tone in their 98-83 loss to Cal Poly. This is the first of two meetings between the Titans (6-20) and the Mustangs (10-15) which was held at Titan Gym. The Titans are 35-39 against the Mustangs with their last win coming Feb. 22, 2024 at Titan Gym.
The Titans did just that. In the opening possession, Fullerton's offense was deliberate in working inside out to create open shots on the perimeter. Keith Richard was the beneficiary of the early game plan as he gave the Titans a 3-0 lead by knocking down an open 3-pointer from the wing.
Kendrick De Luna was a focal point early as the Titans capitalized on his size advantage as De Luna had back-to-back buckets to extend the lead to the Titans largest of the night, 7-0. Despite the Titans' early success, the Mustangs finished the opening half shooting 47 percent on 9-of-19 from beyond the arc which caused the Titans' lead to slowly evaporate. Cal State Fullerton went into the break trailing 40-36.
The second half opened similarly to the first with Fullerton's offense looking to get De Luna involved on the block early as he hit a jump hook to bring the Titans within seven.
Cal Poly's perimeter shooting allowed the Mustangs to pull out to a 58-48 lead with 13:39 remaining before Fullerton went on a 12-0 run that saw back-to-back threes go down for Richard.
The Titans recaptured the lead 60-58 with 10:44 remaining. Fullerton kept the game close and exchanged leads a total of 11 times before Cal Poly eventually pulled away to a 98-83 victory, handing the Titans their sixth consecutive loss and bringing their season record to 6-20.
Richard was a bright spot for the Titans as he led the way with 22-points on 53 percent shooting from the field. His second 20-point performance of the season. Donovan Oday finished the contest as the team's leading rebounder with 8 and added 15 points and two assists, on his birthday, to round out the team leaders.Â
Cal State Fullerton will be back in action Saturday, Feb. 15 at 1:00 p.m. at CSU Bakersfield and will be streaming on ESPN+.
