Henderson's Heroics Spark Late Titans Rally, but Drop Conference Opener

Jaden Henderson was a hero in the Titans late second half surge, but the Titans fell 94-91 in the Big West Conference opener

FULLERTON, Calif. – The Titans hosted the Cal Poly Mustangs at Titan Gym on Thursday night for the Big West Conference opener. Fullerton and Cal Poly were head-to-head for a large portion of the game as there were 10 lead changes and seven times where the two were tied.

Landon Seaman had a big first half for the Titans, while Jaden Henderson shined in the final seconds, leading the hopeful comeback in the first conference game of the season. The pair of Titans were two of five to tally double digits on the night. Henderson, Seaman, KJ Garris, Jefferson De La Cruz Monegro and Joshua Ward tallied a total of 76 point against Cal Poly.

The Cal Poly Mustangs got off to a hot start, posting the first five points of the game before  De La Cruz Monegro found the rim to get the Titans on the board. The Mustangs tallied points, leading by seven at the 17 minute mark, before Fullerton locked in and shut them down.

The Titans posted eight in a row, their largest scoring run of the first half, cutting down on the Mustangs and eventually taking a one-point lead at the 14:50 mark. While the two teams kept going back and forth, Seaman was busy stacking points as he posted nine of his 11 first half points in just six minutes. Fullerton led 44-43 going into the second half.

Seaman led the team with 11 after the first half while Garris was right behind with 10 points. The Titans played small ball, posting 26 points in the paint while the Mustangs shot big and only recorded 10 in the paint, but made up for it with eight baskets from behind the arc. The Titans outscored the Mustangs by the same score in points off the bench (26-10). Fullerton logged nine points off of Cal Poly's 11 first half turnovers.

After heading into the second half with a lead, the Titans found themselves at their lowest point of the night when they were down 79-61 with just over seven minutes to go. The energy in Titan Gym led to Henderson and Seaman posting 12 points in four minutes. Henderson logged eight, including two threes and Seaman tallied the other four to put the Titans in a 73-81 game.

Garris then took the charge and posted six straight points with a minute to go. Titan Gym was rocking and the Titans bench was feeling it. De La Cruz Monegro was fouled on a successful layup earning the Titans an extra point, to cut the Mustangs lead down to five with 46 seconds left to play.

The second half star, Henderson, hit a three pointer at 37 seconds to pull the Titans within two before Cal Poly would go up by four and Henderson would do it again. Fullerton trailed 89-88, but an accidental foul put Cal Poly up by three before Bryce Cofield tipped one in to keep the Titans within reach. Another foul led to the Mustangs tallying extra points that would eventually earn them their 94-91 victory.

CSF continued to be successful in the paint and off the bench in the second half as they posted 16 in the point and the bench tallied 29. The Titans shot 47% on the night and nailed nine three-pointers.

Henderson led the team in the second half, posting 16 and going 4-5 from behind the arc. He posted 21 points on the night and had two steals, three assists and two rebounds. Garris also had a big night, tallying 19 points and led with six rebounds.

The Titans head to Hawaii for their second conference game of the season on Saturday, Dec. 6 at 9 p.m. PT.
