Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Titans Comeback Falls Just Short at San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Cal State Fullerton Titans women's basketball second half comeback attempt came just short in a 56-55 loss against the University of San Diego at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

The Titans made a defensive stand against the Toreros to regain possession with 4 seconds left and the score 56-55.  However, the Titans could not get a clean look on their first inbounds play.  And in their second attempt with 0.4 seconds, Maxine Sutisna's shot was blocked from the USD defender to preserve the win for the Toreros.

The Titans had a tough night shooting as they shot 31.8% from the floor (21-for-66), 20% from beyond the arc (3-for-15), and 52.6% from the charity stripe (10-for-19).  The Toreros shot better than the Titans 42.2% (19-for-45), 43.8% from beyond the arc (7-for-16), and 78.6% from the FT line (11-for-14).  They also outrebounded the Titans 40-to-31  The Titans forced 32 turnovers from San Diego but only scored 21 points off turnovers.  The Titans also had 13 steals for the game.

The Titans led for most of the first quarter as they were forced 8 turnovers from San Diego, however, they also committed six turnovers as well to mostly negate the difference.   The Titans and Toreros were tied at 16-16 after the first quarter.

In the second quarter, USD outscored the Titans 16-to-7 for the quarter. The Toreros made four of their seven three pointers for the game in the second quarter. USD led by 9, 32-23 at halftime.

The Titans played their best basketball of the game in the third quarter as they outscored USD 15-to-9 for the quarter.  After USD maintained their 9 pont lead for the first 2:20 of the quarter.  The Titans went on a 10-4 scoring run to cut the lead down to two points.

Out of the 9 points USD scored in the third quarter, seven of them came from free throws as the Titans held them to just one field goal towards the beginning of the quarter.  At the end of the third quarter, USD led by three points, 41-to-38.

USD took a 6 point 46-40 early in the fourth quarter before the Titans kept things to within one possession for most of the quarter. Jana Falsdottir tied the game at 50-50 on a three pointer with 2:53 left in the game.

USD regained the lead on a three point play by Hallie Rhodes but Cristina Jones responded with a three-point play on her own to make it 53-53 with 1:07 left to play.

USD took the lead 56-53 with :45 seconds left after a three pointer from Olivia Owens.  The Titans brought it back within one point after a Jones layup made it 56-55 with 34 seconds left.  However, that was as close as it would be as the Titans couldn't convert on their final possession.

The Titans will close out their non-conference schedule next Sunday at home against LA Sierra.  Tip-off is set for 2:00 PM at Titan Gym.
