Sacramento, Calif. – The Titans headed up to the State Capitol on Friday morning to race in the Cross Country NCAA West Regionals hosted by Sacramento State. Head Coach
Marques Barosso sent a total of 14 athletes, seven from each team, to compete at Regionals.
Both teams recorded a 22
nd place finish. The men were 22 of 30 while the women were 22 of 39. On the women's side, Stanford won the race as a team while Oregon won it all on the men's side.
The women started the race at the tail end in 26
th but bumped up to 23
rd for the next two splits and as a team pushed during the final split to advance one more spot for a 22
nd place finish.
Bella Smith led the way for the women as she recorded a 21:16.9 6k, a 36 second improvement from the Big West Championships. Her time on Friday put her in 79
th out of 263.
Quinn Roldan was the next Titan to cross the finish line with her time of 21:48.7.
Makena Oliva and
Shandy Moore were the pair of Titans to finish within .3 seconds of each other, crossing the line at 22:05.0 and 22:05.3.
Ashlynn Viramontes and
Barbora Svobodova were another pair that stuck together through the race. The two finished 10 seconds apart. Rounding out the women's team was
Caitlyn Cilley at 23:39.9.
The men also finished in 22
nd as a team after beginning in 18
th and eventually falling behind to 22
nd. Fullerton was able to hang onto that place for the final four splits, for a final 22
nd place finish.
Nathaniel Avila led the men in 61
st with a time of 30:37.6, a new personal best in the 10k.
Justin Singer logged a 31:56.5 finish in the men's 10k.
Luke Hitchcock ran his first collegiate 10k and recorded a time of 32:07.7, while
Carlos Maradiaga ran a 32:15.8 mark in his first 10k.
The pair of Titans freshmen,
Andrew Quast and
Jacob Brown, rounded out the 10k with Quast finishing at 32:19.6 and Brown at 33:14.2.
The Titans will wait to see if their postseason journey continues to the NCAA Championships next Saturday, Nov. 22.
