FULLERTON, Calif. – The Cal State Fullerton Men's Water Polo hosted No. 10 Long Beach State for the Big West Conference Opener on Thursday evening. After a close first quarter, the Beach took charge, coming out on top in a 20-9 game.
LBSU posted two goals to start the first quarter, but the Titans followed up with three goals to take their only lead of the game.
Nico D'Angelo,
Andrew Barnuevo, and
Francesco Schiaffino went back-to-back-to back putting CSF up 3-2, but the Beach quickly erased Fullerton's lead. Long Beach went on to score three consecutive goals before
Julian Nichols closed out the first quarter with a goal scored on a power play. The Titans trailed 5-4 at the end of the first.
The Titans were outscored 8-3 in the second frame as Long Beach only allowed D'Angelo, Nichols, and Schiaffino to find the back of the net for the second time of game.
Trailing 13-7 after the first half, CSF entered the second half with one thing on their mind, but the Long Beach defense held them to just two goals in the final half.
Jacob Hatch scored on a penalty shot in the third quarter and
Tony Benedetti found his way to the back of the net with one minute to go in the game.
D'Angelo, Nichols and Schiaffino led the Titans with two goals each, while
Bende Aubeli topped the Titans with three assists on the day.
Ethan Ivey got the start in the conference home opener and tallied five saves.
The Titans are back in action on the road on Oct. 17 at 6 p.m. as they face Big West opponent, UC Davis.
