Davis, Calif. – The Fullerton Titans Men's Water Polo team took a trip up north on Friday night to take on the #6 UC Davis Aggies for the second Big West matchup of the season. After a slow start for the Titans, they were able to gain some momentum, but it was not enough to stop the nationally ranked Aggies.
The Aggies opened up with a hot 4-0 start and were almost unstoppable.
Ethan MacLeod got a feel for the Aggies defense and was able to make it past the keeper with three minutes left in the first. After MacLeod's goal, UC Davis put up four more goals for an 8-1 lead at the end of the first.
Andrew Barnuevo and
Alec Isaacman went back-to-back in the second quarter, but the Titans could not find a way to post more than two in the second. CSF trailed 13-3 heading into the second half.
Freshman,
Luke Vargas, ran the third frame for the Titans as he logged two, but still not enough to match the Aggies' four goals in the third quarter.
The Titans gained some momentum in the final quarter, scoring five, but still allowed UCD to post six, leading to an Aggies win. MacLeod recorded the first Titans goal of the fourth and
Luke Vargas followed up to log a hat trick.
Carmelo Bangs made his way to the net before
Jacob Hatch posted a pair of goals late in the fourth quarter. Freshman,
Francesco Schiaffino closed out the game, firing one past the keeper, but UC Davis came out on top in an 11-22 game.
Hatch stood out for the Titans with three assists, two goals and a steal. Vargas also made his mark with his third hat trick of his collegiate career.
The Titans make their way back home on Friday, Oct. 24 as they take on UC Irvine at 6 p.m.
