CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Cal State Fullerton Titans split the final day of the Gary Troyer Tournament on Saturday. Fullerton came out on top against Wagner College, taking a 13-7 victory to extend their winning streak to 11. The second game of the day was a close one that came down to the final minutes versus CBU, but the Lancers slipped away with a 12-11 win.
Nico D'Angelo picked up his 100
th career goal in the first game of the day and
Andrew Barnuevo had himself a day, recording a hat trick in both games.
Titans 13, Wagner 7
The Titans took down the Seahawks of Wagner College in the first game of Saturday's slate.
Andrew Barnuevo logged a hat trick while
Julian Nichols and
Ethan MacLeod also recorded a multi-goal game, contributing to Fullerton's 13-7 win.
The first quarter ended in a 3-3 tie after Barnuevo netted two and MacLeod tallied one. Fullerton took care of business in the second quarter, outscoring the Seahawks 3-1.
Luke Vargas and
Marton Thuroczy found the back of the net to put the Titans up 5-3. Wagner scored one, but Nichols capped off the first half with a goal at the buzzer to send the game into the third quarter with the Titans leading 6-4.
The highlight of the third quarter was
Nico D'Angelo's goal at the 5:03 mark. D'Angelo's third quarter goal was his 100
th career goal.
Bende Aubeli,
Jacob Hatch, MacLeod and Barnuevo also scored in the third, giving Fullerton some insurance.
Entering the fourth frame with a score of 11-5, Wagner attempted a comeback, being the first to find the net in the final quarter, but Nichols and
Jace Peterson tacked on two more to seal the 13-7 victory over the Seahawks.
Ethan Ivey got the start in the net and logged eight saves. MacLeod led the team with two assists in game one on Saturday, while
Togan Ozbek and Hatch recorded two steals each.
Titans 11 , Cal Baptist 12
Cal Baptist and the Titans went head-to-head in the final match of the Gary Troyer Tournament and it came down to the final minutes when CBU crushed the Titans winning streak.
Barnuevo continued his impressive day, scoring first to get the game started. Vargas added on to put Fullerton up 2-0 in the first two minutes. CBU quickly tied it up at two, but Nichols and Aubeli didn't let the quarter end there. The pair of Titans went back-to-back in the final minute of the first quarter to take a 4-2 lead.
The Lancers outscored the Titans 7-4 in the second quarter, but
Samuel Branco, Nichols and Barnuevo kept the Titans in the game, heading into the second half trailing 9-8.
The second half was a slower pace for both teams as CSF outscored the Lancers 2-1 in the third and CBU outscored the Titans 2-1 in the fourth. Nichols, MacLeod and Aubeli were the three Titans to tack on goals for Fullerton in the last half, but CBU came out on top with a final score of 12-11.
Nichols and Barnuevo each recorded a hat trick and Aubeli tallied a pair of goals to go with his two assists. Ozbek also tallied two assists in the final match of the day. The Titans recorded six steals, with
Francesco Schiaffino leading the team with two.
Ethan Ivey guarded the net and logged 10 saves against the Lancers.
Big West Conference play begins on Thursday, Oct. 9 at 6 p.m. when the Titans host Long Beach State at Titans Aquatics Center.
