Box Score SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton women's volleyball dropped its road match in straight sets to Cal Poly on Saturday, falling 17-25, 23-25, 15-25, despite battling through 22 ties and six lead changes. The Titans move to 7-13 overall and 2-6 in Big West play.Â
The Titans and Mustangs traded points in a hard-fought opening set that featured 13 ties and three lead changes.
Ketesia Hall (8 kills, 1 block) beat all competitors to the board with the first kill of the match, and
Neeva Gaine (2 kills) followed with two more to give the Titans a 5-3 lead. After the Mustangs jumped ahead of the Titans,
Mya Tillman (2 kills, 7 assists, 16 digs) evened the score at 8-8 with a kill of her own.Â
The back-and-forth stretch continued with kills by Hall and
Elon Smith (7 kills, 3 blocks), while
Marisa Nakata (5 kills, 13 digs) completed a successful attack to bump Fullerton ahead 11-10. A
Hannah Hass service ace helped the Titans even the score at 16-16, but Cal Poly answered with a 9-1 run to close out the set, 25-17.Â
Fullerton found a 2-1 lead in the second set following a pair of Cal Poly errors, but the Mustangs quickly regrouped to grab a 5-2 lead. Kills by Nakata and Hall, along with additional Mustang mistakes, kept the Titans close at 11-9.
Emilia Graham (2 kills) delivered a kill to maintain a three-point margin, and a 3-0 Fullerton run cut the deficit to 20-19, prompting a timeout by Cal Poly.Â
The Titans tied the set 20-20 on a Hall kill, and the teams continued to trade points late in the set.
Sarah Schubert and Smith combined at the net to even the score at 23-23, but the Mustangs responded with back-to-back kills to close out the set, 25-23, and take a 2-0 match lead.Â
Hall continued to pace the Titans in the third set, taking a 2-1 lead on back-to-back kills. Smith and Nakata added five more kills, but Cal Poly did not back down on either side of the net. A 6-0 Mustang run opened up a 9-3 advantage, which grew to 14-6.
Graham pulled the Titans into double digits with a kill to make it 16-10, but Cal Poly closed the door with a late 4-0 run. The Mustangs secured a 25-15 win to complete the sweep over the Titans.Â
Titans Volleyball returns to Fullerton on Thursday, Oct. 21, for its Pride Night match, hosting UC Irvine at 6 p.m. in Titan Gym. The Titans will then travel to Honolulu for a 10 p.m. PST matchup at Hawai'i on Saturday, Oct. 23.
