FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton dropped its Big West opener to UC Santa Barbara Wednesday night at Titan Stadium by a final score of 1-0. With the loss the Titans drop to 3-4-4 on the year and 0-1-0 in conference play.
UC Santa Barbara took the lead in the 27th minute of play off a follow on a rebound by Buba Fofanah who recorded the initial shot. Fofanah's first shot was saved by Asger Hemmer, however, the rebound came right back for an easy finish to put UCSB up 1-0.
Similar to their game last Saturday against San Diego State, Fullerton dominated in the shot category but weren't able to find the back of the net. The Titans recorded 17 shots while UC Santa Barbara recorded nine.
The Titans created several quality chances in the final third but missed touches and errant shots led a second consecutive game being shutout.
After giving up an early goal, the Titans defense found their form to hold the Gauchos to nine total shots and just three in the second half. Nick Relerford was a force on the defensive end, showing relentless hustle to make stops all over the field.
Fullerton looks to bounce back on the road Saturday afternoon in a Big West matchup at Sacramento State. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
