Titans Defeat Oral Roberts in 3-0 Sweep

Lolo Fonua records 10 kills, Ryleigh Garis and Mya Tillman combine for 31 assists

FULLERTON. Calif. – Cal State Fullerton women's volleyball defeated Oral Roberts in three straight sets (25-15, 25-20, 25-26) on Friday night to secure consecutive match sweeps. The Titans are 2-4 overall, while standing 6-4 when they win the first point of a set and 8-3 when they are the first to 20 points.  

As a team, the Titans (.333) out-hit the Golden Eagles (.097). Outside hitter Lolo Fonua led the Titans with 10 kills on 17 attempts. Ryleigh Garis posted a team-leading 19 assists while Mya Tillman set up 12 kills. Ashley Chacon earned her 78th dig of the season while leading all match players with 13 digs. 

The Titans beat the Golden Eagles to the scoreboard on a Lyla Traylor kill set up by Ryleigh Garis. Fullerton doubled their lead, 14-7, over Oral Roberts as Ameena Campbell and Bianca Martinez set up shop, putting up a monster block.  



Mya Tillman extended Fullerton's lead to 20 on a service ace before the Titans put together four kills by Nia Cummings, Traylor, Lolo Fonua and Martinez, to take the first set 25-15. 

Oral Roberts called first point in the second set, but the Titans wasted no time in tying the game at 1-1 on a kill by Martinez. The Titans took the lead with a Traylor service ace before extending their lead to 3-1 on a successful block by Traylor. Traylor and Cummings called set point and recorded back-to-back blocks for a 25-20 second set win. 



The Titans jumped to a 2-0 lead over Oral Roberts to kick off the third set. They found themselves trailing 3-2 following two attacking errors and a service error. Campbell and Martinez tied the game at 3-3 with a block before the Titans retook a 4-3 lead on a cross-court point by Fonua. Fonua pushed the Titans to a 6-4 lead before a 3-0 scoring run by Oral Roberts 3-0 took the lead from Fullerton, 7-6. 



The Golden Eagles and Titans entered a back-and-forth match, started by a monster block by Martinez and Laura Williams that gave the Titans a 9-8 lead. Another defensive masterpiece at the net by the duo gave the Titans a two-point lead (10-8), but Oral Roberts matched the Titans at 10-10 on the next two plays. Oral Roberts kept a steady pace with the Titans, tying the game for a fifth time before the Titans regained and maintained the lead for the remainder of the match. A 3-0 scoring run by the Titans was met with an Oral Roberts kill to bring the score to 23-16. Mya Williams assisted Williams on the attack followed by a Garis assisted kill by Fonua to secure the match sweep, 25-16.  

In the third week of the 2024 season, the Titans tied last season's record at two match wins. 

Cal State Fullerton returns to the court Sunday morning (9:00 a.m.) for a second matchup with Oral Roberts before hosting Saint Mary's at 1:30 p.m. to close out the Titan Invitational.
