FULLERTON, Calif. — Cal State Fullerton women's volleyball swept Oral Roberts (25-20, 25-23, 25-23) before falling in four sets to Saint Mary's (25-17, 25-23, 25-29, 27-25) on Saturday. The Titans finish the Titan Invitational 2-1 and stand 3-5 overall this season.Â
The Titans went on a 9-0 set win streak before dropping the first set to Saint Mary's in Saturday's second game. This streak started on Sept. 7 with their first match sweep over Gonzaga at the Gonzaga Invite. It is the first time the Titans have gone on such a stretch since 2019 against Western Caroline (Sept. 6), Alabama State (Sept. 7) and Abilene Christian (Sept. 12).Â
Lyla Traylor and
Ameena Campbell earned their first double-doubles of the season posting a combined 39 kills and 28 digs for the team. Traylor smashed 15 kills and 14 digs in the second game while Campbell killed 11 balls and dug up 10.Â
Cal State Fullerton 3, Oral Roberts 0Â
The Titans started the match in a 4-0 deficit. They remained trailing the Golden Eagles until a 6-0 scoring run tied the game at 14-14. A pair of kills by Campbell and
Lolo Fonua earned the Titans their first lead of the match (16-15).Â
Fonua scored Fullerton's 20th point with a kill assisted by
Ryleigh Garis before Traylor finished a kill set up by
Mya Tillman to call set point. The Titans made a comeback 25-20 set win on a kill by
Laura Williams.Â
The second set repeated recent history as Oral Roberts jumped to a 2-0 lead on a kill and attacking error by Fonua. The Titans, with the help of a Golden Eagles service error, tied the game at 3-3 before taking a 5-4 lead on an
Nia Cummings kill. Williams smashed back-to-back kills late in the second half to secure a second set win, 25-23, over Oral Roberts.Â
Fullerton and Oral Roberts took turns tying the game for the first half of the first set. Their 16 kills and .238 hitting percentage in the third set secured their second straight set sweep over the Golden Eagles in less than 24 hours.Â
Saint Mary's 3, Cal State Fullerton 1
Traylor cut Saint Mary's lead in half (2-1) to start Fullerton's scoring on a kill. The Titans trailed the Gaels for the entirety of the first set, dropping their first set of the weekend, 25-17.Â
The Titans knotted the second set at 4-4 on a Saint Mary's service error before powering to a 15-9 lead over the Gaels. Saint Mary's matched the Titans at 19-19 and maintained the lead over the Titans for a 25-23 second set win.Â
Fullerton's 12 kills, .162 hitting average, two aces and seven blocks propelled them to a 25-19 win in the third set, saving them from a match sweep. Williams contributed eight kills to the set, launching one down the line to lead 18-10 earlier on.Â
A hard-fought fourth set exceeded 25 points as
Bianca Martinez killed a ball set up by Ryliegh Garis at middle court. Garis recorded 47 of the Titans 69 assists across the two games.Â
Saint Mary's took the last two points of the game, ending the match with a 27-25 set win over Fullerton.Â
