FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton women's volleyball closed out the Fullerton Invitational losing to Louisiana Tech in three straight sets (25-18, 26-24, 25-17) and San Jose State in four sets (25-22, 25-21, 25-21, 25-17) on Saturday. The Titans hold a 0-3 record heading into the second week of season, while standing 2-2 when being the first team to score in a set and first team to 20 points.Â
Ameena Campbell recorded a team-high 36 kills over the weekend. Setter
Ryleigh Garis collected 109 assists while
Ashley Chacon leads the team with 44 digs.Â
Louisiana Tech 3, Cal State Fullerton 0
The Titans quickly found themselves fighting from behind in the first set as LA Tech grabbed a 2-0 lead.
Bianca Martinez cut their lead in half with a kill set up by Garis. Fullerton fought from behind until a five-point run allowed them to tie the first set at 13-13 on an ace by Chacon. 11 of their 33 kills came in the first set but were not enough to fend off the Bulldogs, who took the set 25-18.
Fullerton flipped the narrative at the start of the second set, taking the first two points on a kill by Martinez and a monster block by Martinez and Campbell. The Titans extended their lead over the Bulldogs to 11-5 on another successful block by
Laura Williams and Martinez.Â

They went on to hold the lead until LA Tech tied the game at 22-22. Williams wasted no time in putting the Titans back on top, 23-22, with a cross-court kill. LA Tech took the lead (24-23) from the Titans for the first time in the second after finding an unoccupied back line. The Titans responded quickly on a kill by Campbell but was not enough to stop the Bulldogs from taking the last two points for the set win (26-24).Â
Fullerton fought from behind throughout the entire third set where they found eight kills and 43 digs. The Titans fell to the Bulldogs 25-17 in the third set, earning their second loss of the season.Â
San Jose State 3, Cal State Fullerton 1
A change in momentum powered the Titans to a 25-22 first set victory over San Jose State. Martinez led the team with a .381 hit percentage with 11 kills. Garis assisted in a season-high 45 points in the match.Â
The Titans jumped to a 4-0 lead over the Spartans, starting the game with a service ace by
Aubrey Beaver. Martinez and
Lyla Traylor contributed two kills to the lead before San Jose State put one away on a kill of their own.
Nia Cummings helped the Titans beat San Jose State to the 20 point mark on a power kill that beat the reach of the Spartan defender. The Titans went on to win their first set of the day, 25-22.Â

A quick 2-0 lead was followed by three consecutive kills by Martinez, Cummings and Traylor for a 5-1 lead. The lead got away from the Titans who kept the game within two until San Jose State went on a four-point run. The Titans dropped the second set 25-21 before dropping the final two sets to the Spartans, earning their third loss of the season.Â
As a team, the Titans collected 141 kills for an average of 12.8 a set, 126 assists with 11.5 assists per set, 16 aces and 139 digs.Â
