XC Opens Season with Strong Showing in Brea

BREA, Calif. — Cal State Fullerton cross country kicked off the 2024 season Saturday morning with a strong showing at the Mark Covert Classic. The Titan men placed second while the women finished sixth. 

The Fullerton men were led by senior Tony Chavez in the 8k, who clocked a personal-best 24:16.7 and placed third overall. Marco Perez followed closely behind, finishing fourth with a personal-best 24:17.1. Talman Young earned an 18th place finish after running a 24:52.5. 

Sophomore Jaden Wiley ran a 24:59.2 to place 24th, while freshman Carlos Maradiaga came in at 25:07.2, finishing 31st. Jonathan Pfeiffer followed in 33rd with a 25:08.0 while JT McCoy rounded out the men's squad's scoring finishers with a 35th place finish and a time of 25:15.4. 

As a team, the men totaled 74 points, finishing in second behind California Baptist (33) and ahead of Big West foe UC San Diego in third (90). 

On the women's side, junior Nanette Novak led the way in the 5k with a 16th place finish and a time of 18:16.5. Bella Smith followed in 23rd with an 18:36.9. Shandy Moore clocked in at 18:41.6 in her first race as a Titan to place 26th. 

Ashlynn Viramontes finished 31st with an 18:50.1 while Destiny Lopez placed 42nd with a 19:04.6. Freshmen Elena Martinez and Natalie Maahs rounded out the women's team's scoring finishers. Martinez ran a 19:12.3 to place 47th while Maahs ran a 19:24.7 to place 60th. 

Up next for the Titans is the UC Riverside Invitational, which will take place on Saturday, Sept. 21.
