Baseball Promotes Day and Spencer; Adds Carlson and Skelly to Staff

FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton baseball and head coach Jason Dietrich announced the promotion of Ryan Day to assistant coach and Connor Spencer to Director of Operations.

"I am very excited to announce Ryan Day as one of our Assistant Coaches. Ryan has been coaching college baseball for the last 12 years and he brings a lot of knowledge and experience to our players," Dietrich said. "He has worked for former Titans, Joe Turgeon and  Matt Fahey, at Concordia University along with numerous other respected coaches that have helped shape him as a coach. Ryan is going to bring a lot of energy, hold our players to a high standard and help our players develop to their fullest potential."

Day came to Cal State Fullerton prior to the 2024 season after spending five years at Long Beach State. While at Long Beach, he was the Director of Baseball Operations from 2018-2020, before transitioning into the Volunteer Assistant position in 2021.

Day helped guide Connor Burns to back-to-back Big West Defensive Player of the Year (2022, 2023). The sophomore was the first winner of the award since 2017 and just third in program history. He was also named a finalist for the Rawlings/Gold Glove Award in back-to-back seasons (2022 & 2023), as well as being named to the Buster Posey Award watch list in 2023. Burns went on to be drafted in the fifth round by the Cincinnati Reds.

Day went to Long Beach State from his alma mater, Concordia University in Irvine, where he spent six seasons as a coach and worked alongside former Titans Alumni, Joe Turgeon and Matthew Fahey. He served as the pitching coach, the assistant recruiting coordinator, camp coordinator, and alumni coordinator. During his time with the Eagles, he spent two seasons coaching in the Northwoods League with the Mankato Moondogs, as the assistant coach and field manager.

Day played two seasons with the Eagles, as an Outfielder/Pitcher, before serving as the teams closer in his senior season en route to the program's first ever NAIA National Championship in 2011. Prior to his time at Concordia, Day was a catcher and outfielder at Fullerton Junior College, under head coach Nick Fuscardo.

Throughout his coaching career, Day has helped mentor 30 players who have gone on to get drafted or sign professional baseball contracts. While at Concordia, Day was instrumental in the recruitment of the all-time home run leader Bailey Collins (35), and the single season saves leader Tyler Mark (24), who would go on to be drafted in the sixth round by the Arizona Diamondbacks. While at Long Beach, Day helped recruit 2021 Collegiate Baseball First Team All-American, Johnathan Lavallee, who would go on to be drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 16th round.

Spencer came to Cal State Fullerton prior to the 2023 season after coaching in the California Collegiate League with the OC Riptide and at his alma mater, Tesoro High School. While with the Riptide, Spencer served as the hitting and infield coach while also being the third base coach.

"Connor Spencer is shifting over from Director of Player Development to our Director of Baseball Operations," Dietrich said. "Connors organizational skills and attention to detail is going to help our programs operations at a high level. I am looking forward to seeing Connor flourish in this new role."

Spencer won the Big West Conference batting title in 2013 with UC Irvine and helped the Anteaters reach the 2014 College World Series in Omaha. Spencer earned most valuable player of the Corvallis Regional that same year. Spencer's name is riddled throughout UCI's record books despite only playing three seasons there. The New York Yankees selected Spencer in the eighth round of the 2014 MLB draft after his third season at UCI.

Dietrich also announced the addition of Sean Skelly as the director of player development and Tanner Carlson as the assistant director of operations.

Skelly comes to Cal State Fullerton after playing the last two years with the Ogden Raptors and Boise Hawks in the Pioneer League. Skelly played college baseball at Tennessee, Orange Coast College and CSUN. In three seasons at CSUN, Skelly had a .307 batting average with 42 runs, 37 RBI and 10 home runs and earned All-Big West Second Team in 2019.

"Sean is an up and coming baseball coach. He has a great baseball background and has played at the Division 1 and professional levels.  He is going to help with our growth in player development and the players will blossom under his tutelage. I am excited to be able to add Sean to our staff and welcome him to the Titan Nation."

Carlson joins the Titans after working as a junior data operator for the Sacramento River Cats, the Triple-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants. Carlson spent three seasons playing at Long Beach State (2019-22) before playing his final season at Texas (2023). In three years at Long Beach, Carlson had a .291 batting average with 42 runs and 35 RBI. Carlson had a .306 batting average at Texas with 17 runs and 14 RBI.

"Tanner is another great addition to our coaching staff. He is going to help assist Connor Spencer with the day to day operations of our program. His baseball background is off the charts," Dietrich said. "He played at Long Beach State and Texas and learned from his dad who was a top high school head coach for many years at Elk Grove high school. His brother, Dylan, was a Titan commit back in 2016 but was drafted in the first round by the St Louis Cardinals. Let's welcome Tanner to the Titan Nation."
